Getting to the point where I am sitting with a student teaching has taken a very long time. I applied for my job in mid December, did supplemental paperwork and 2 interviews in January, accepted in early February, and went to a week long training in mid February. After the training I could have started working, however since I was going out of town for 3 weeks it seemed silly to work for 1-2 weeks and then leave.
Upon returning from the states I went in for a day long training and took an exam (passed!). And then yesterday, after months of buildup and waiting, I taught! I went in to the school and had a practice lesson with some coworkers and my boss. I then didn’t have any lessons for a couple hours, until around 7:15pm. Then it was time and I was so nervous! I walked into my classroom and ended up having a great experience. During the break I went back to the teachers’ lounge and got high fives encouraging smiles. I finished my lesson and went home for the night. My boss said I did really well. All rooms are microphoned for quality assurance, and he said whenever he tuned into my classroom he heard conversation and laughing which is always a good sign.
Because it took so long to get to actually teaching, I had a lot of nervousness and anticipation. I’m so happy it went well. I go back today for evening lessons, and I’m pretty excited about that!
I got home from work about the same time Dan did, and instead of cooking dinner we decided to go out to celebrate my good first day. All our local ramen shops were closed so we went to the next town over and tried a new, very very delicious place. The ramen noodles were thick and it had a yummy soft boiled egg in the hot broth. Perfect end to a cold night!
