I suppose this entry should have come before my Big Nate entry, but oh well! I don’t teach Fridays, and Dan took the day off so we could have a fun spring Disney day. Here at Tokyo Disneyland, they celebrate Easter until June, so we wanted to see the Easter decorations before they got taken down! Also, the park has an Easter egg hunt that’s fun to run around the park and accomplish. 🙂

It was also a fun excuse to test out my new camera!

The BIG News…

I’m an aunt to a brand new baby nephew!
Welcome to the world Nathan Lee!
Photobucket

Nathan (or as I like to call him, Big Nate!) was incredibly impatient and wanted out! He kept psyching my sister and brother in law out for a week or so, and then made his grand appearance in the wee hours of Friday, April 20th. I was out of the apartment all day while she was in labor, which I think is a good thing, because I would have been texting my brother in law for updates every 5 minutes!!

Big Nate came 6 weeks early and weighed under 5 lbs. Naturally he is spending some extra time in the hospital to beef up and get strong enough to go home!

My sister is doing great, as is my brother in law and 2 13 year old nieces. As my BIL says, “they’re excited now, but Baby hasn’t come home and cried all night yet!”

I wish so much I was with my family right now. I think they know it, but in case they don’t, here I am telling the world that if I had the cash and time off of my new job to fly home for a week, oh I’d do it in a heartbeat! Saving my funds now means a longer trip in September, when he’s 4 months old and up for some play time!

Nate, your best days are ahead of you. You’re going to laugh and cry, have good and bad days, feel on top of the world one day and feel completely pancaked the next. If I could tell you anything right now, it’d be that it’s all normal and you have the most amazing family to help you through it. Until we meet this September! <3

Quite a Day!

What a day it’s been! I really wanted to give you all an update before I went to bed, and share some pictures and news, but I’m just too tired!

Dan and I had an amazing day at Tokyo Disneyland! I’ll do a full update tomorrow but until then, here’s a quick pic or two from my new camera!

Runs and Pictures

I’ve received emails about my runs, so I thought I’d take a screen shot of my Nike+ program on my iPod when I go for a run, so people can see how I do!

I’m making good progress at getting back to my pre-vacation distance. Before I left, I was running 7.5 miles. Today I went for 6! I’m also running slower than I was, but I figure I want to finish a race more than anything, speed can come later. I should also add, the time is in Pacific time, I normally run between 11am and 1pm 🙂

Photobucket

I’m still learning how to work my new camera, but I think what I’m most excited about is the detail it captures better than my point and shoot camera.

Once I have time to get outside and go somewhat I’ll take much more interesting photos! Dan is working from home today since it’s now his turn to have a cold. We’re about to enjoy a late lunch together before I take off for work!

Running and New Toys!

Alternate working title- Running: How Laurel Got Her Groove Back

I’m elated to be writing this blog entry after a FANTASTIC run. As you all have read over the past week or so, I’ve been whining and moaning about just not feeling it when I go out for runs. I lost muscle and endurance on vacation, then caught a cold. So it’s been a slow journey to get back to where I was pre-vacation in terms of speed and distance. And I’m still not there! But today I busted out 5 miles like it wasn’t a big deal. I felt strong and had good energy the whole time!

I should also mention, while we’re being honest, that I had a big setback this weekend. I ate McDonalds! I haven’t has fast food all year, not even in America!! It just sounded so good and Dan and I didn’t want to cook. I woke up the next morning feeling bloated and down. I wondered if I blew it, if that was the end of all my dieting and exercising. I gained a pound. But it was just one meal, out of hundreds that I’ll eat this year, and I’m over it! So on with the healthy eating! At least I’m still doing well avoiding dairy!

Officially down 24 pounds from January 3rd!

But on to other things. I ordered my first DSLR camera Saturday from Amazon! They said it would arrive Wednesday, so imagine my shock when I checked package tracking and it said it had been delivered! I flew out of my apartment and down to the lobby where it was waiting in a mail locker.

I love getting stuff in the mail!
Photobucket

I have been researching cameras and lenses for MONTHS now. I kid you not, I have asked all my photographer friends for advice and studied up online and played with camera in electronics stores. And it was finally here!

My first thought upon pulling the camera out was, “oh my, this thing is HUGE!”
Photobucket

Dan and I are hoping to go to Tokyo Disneyland Friday, so it will be a wonderful chance to take some shots and see how they look! In the mean time I’ll be here on my couch with Penny, studying this 300+ page manual…

Hope to show you all some great pictures soon!

Neither Dan nor I worked today, and we had nice weather, so we decided to have some fun!

First I had brunch with a good friend I met while volunteering in Ishinomaki last summer. I’m so glad I’ve been able to keep in touch with so many volunteer friends! She took me to a fun restaurant in Shibuya called The Pink Cow. I had delicious raspberry pancakes with cinnamon syrup, and it was heaven!

We caught up and shared teaching stories, then said goodbye and I met Dan. He surprised me by bringing Penny!

We walked around Yoyogi for a while, past yummy food carts and performers before returning home. We decided to go to the park across the street from our apartment for a little walk.

More exciting news- I have decided to put more attention to detail into my photography, and invested in my first DSLR camera! I’m excited to fiddle with settings and capture the best pictures I can of my life here while I’m in Japan and when I travel.

I’ve also set up a Flikr account so I can share more photos! You can bookmark and keep up with my budding photography hobby here: www.flickr.com/photos/laurelshane/

We came home and I read while Dan and Penny prompty fell asleep on the couch. I just started reading the third Millennium trilogy book, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson. Later Dan and I made chicken fried rice for dinner. A perfect way to end the weekend!

I’ve been home for a little over 2 weeks now, and so much has changed!

The biggest change is I finally start teaching part time at night. It’s nice to have something to do and people to talk with! I practice English with a few people at a time and get to learn about daily life for people born and raised in Japan. All my coworkers are nice and I’m really enjoying my time there. And because it’s night school I still have time before work to go running!

Last week I grabbed lunch with some ladies from work (we actually work at different schools, but were in training together)

Speaking of running, it’s not going as great as it was earlier this year. I ran on vacation in Portland and Seattle, but towards the end of my trip my runs got shorter, if I even ventured out. I was satisfied at the time though because my weight wasn’t going up.

Upon returning home and going for a run, I realized I lost all my muscle! It was SO disappointing how tired I got after a few laps at the park. It felt like starting over. To top it off, I caught a cold and took some time off running to baby myself with blankets and books and movies on the couch. I’m slowly starting to build up my distance again though, so I’m on the right track!

As for diet and exercise, I’m definitely less gung-ho about it than earlier this year. My excuses are getting into the groove of starting a new job and then being sick. We ate a lot of ramen that week I had a cold. We haven’t fallen into bad habits or anything, just not being as mindful as earlier in the year.

I did whip up some yummy strawberry banana pancakes for breakfast last Sunday. They were so yummy!

Dan and I still go to the Ghibli Animation Museum every month to watch the film clip of the month. It feels like we’ve been a lot lately, because we went the last day of March and then the first week of April!

Usually the cafe is packed, but when we went there were openings! So we sat and had some cocoa in the charming little Straw Hat Cafe

I taught today, but my last lesson canceled, so I came home early and Dan and I started some preliminary spring cleaning. Neither if us work tomorrow, Sunday, so we are hoping to clean more, and either hit the gym or go for a hike if the weather lets us! It’s pretty rainy right now though!

I went to upload some pictures from Dan’s and my trip to the Ghibli Museum today, and I realized I didn’t upload all my Portland pictures! I don’t have too many but still some fun highlights to share 🙂

The first thing I came home to when I landed in Portland was a face full of blue ribbons! My nieces Melissa and Vanessa but won their divisions at their most recent horse show. This makes me such a proud aunt!

I got to see my good friend Thomas from college almost every other day while I was in town. We get by by texting a lot during the week, but really specialize in being apart for long chunks of time, then picking up where we left off as though I haven’t moved away!

Alright, I lied. I also have a few Seattle pictures. Here is my bestest gal Kelsey with Eleanor, the 13 year old girl she nannies. She had the day off school, so we had a ladies day with lunch and shopping!
Photobucket

After shopping we dropped Ms. Eleanor off for 3 hours of ballet class. This is what I miss most about living in the Pacific Northwest- a drink and lazy chit chat with my friends. Kelsey and I killed time at Pesos in Seattle with a cocktail and some snacks.
Photobucket

We were up and at it early this day! Crossing the bridge into the city to help dip 300 strawberries! I’m so lucky to have a friend whose boss is ok with me tagging along while I’m in town!

Matchy matchy! Here is Eleanor and I in bright pink! Kelsey was trying to convince her to study in the ballet school’s library until her classes started. Clearly I’m a distraction to the daily routine!

Lauren’s Super Shower

This is a long overdue post! I know several people have been patiently waiting for me to blog about the baby shower I threw for my sister, and with the craziness of coming back from vacation, starting a new job, spring cleaning and managing a headcold I’m back on top of things!

On Sunday March 25th, my mother, best friend Kelsey and I threw my sister Lauren a superhero themed baby shower. We started the day with out best foot forward- getting manicures and pedicures for the big day!

Once we had beautified, we returned home to do some final decorating. Throughout the week my mom and I had been working on several tasks- making a diaper cake, a balloon wreath, ordering a cake, Superman coasters, signs and decorations. So all that was left on the big day was to hang everything up!

As usual with most parties, gifts took quite a bit of time and once we were done, people stayed for some cake and slowly trickled out. But not without a visit to our candy buffet! The day was perfect. I had as much fun planning the party as I did being there! And now I can say next month, I will have a little nephew!

Happy Birthday Brita!

A few hours late, but I wanted to say happy 27th birthday to my oldest friend Brita! We’ve been friends since we were 12 years old, in 7th grade! I was able to stay with her for a night while in Seattle where we did the usual fun tourist things.

And of course, it’s not a trip to Seattle without visiting the famous gum wall! I’m also munching a box of the freshest blackberries I’ve tasted in ages!
