That’s Fintastic!

I’m about to pop this card in the mail tomorrow for a friend’s birthday. I’m usually happy with the cards I make, but sometimes I just think they turn out so cute!

Work Success!

Getting to the point where I am sitting with a student teaching has taken a very long time. I applied for my job in mid December, did supplemental paperwork and 2 interviews in January, accepted in early February, and went to a week long training in mid February. After the training I could have started working, however since I was going out of town for 3 weeks it seemed silly to work for 1-2 weeks and then leave.

Upon returning from the states I went in for a day long training and took an exam (passed!). And then yesterday, after months of buildup and waiting, I taught! I went in to the school and had a practice lesson with some coworkers and my boss. I then didn’t have any lessons for a couple hours, until around 7:15pm. Then it was time and I was so nervous! I walked into my classroom and ended up having a great experience. During the break I went back to the teachers’ lounge and got high fives encouraging smiles. I finished my lesson and went home for the night. My boss said I did really well. All rooms are microphoned for quality assurance, and he said whenever he tuned into my classroom he heard conversation and laughing which is always a good sign.

Because it took so long to get to actually teaching, I had a lot of nervousness and anticipation. I’m so happy it went well. I go back today for evening lessons, and I’m pretty excited about that!

I got home from work about the same time Dan did, and instead of cooking dinner we decided to go out to celebrate my good first day. All our local ramen shops were closed so we went to the next town over and tried a new, very very delicious place. The ramen noodles were thick and it had a yummy soft boiled egg in the hot broth. Perfect end to a cold night!

I have made a Twitter account. I think I may ultimately end up posting my Twitter update feed here on the side of my blog, but for now feel free to follow me as I babble about mundane details like running, exercise, meals, work, and everything else not completely worthy of a blog entry πŸ™‚

The 20 lb Difference

I have lots of new readers from one of my favorite blogs, Run for Cookies, so I want to say welcome! Since this blog is about my expat life and weight loss, I try to balance the two, but I haven’t talked too much about my weight loss recently since I’ve been so busy traveling.

I hit an awesome milestone- down 20 lbs! Technically 21 πŸ˜‰

The difference is slight, but it’s there. Before I launch into why I’m doing this and my experience so far, I wanted to jot down some differences I’ve noticed in just losing 20 lbs:
*I feel like I’m on caffeine all the time. Where’d this energy come from?!
*I can’t remember the last time I sat indian-style. Cozy!
*This is the first winter in years I haven’t got sick. May be speculation, but I suspect my immune system has improved.
*Dan can pick me up!
*Did airplane seats get roomier?
*I can talk after walking up a flight of stairs
*I can spend a day walking all over a Disney park and my feet aren’t killing me
*I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe of clothes that are comfy- and look good!
*I don’t crave the junk I used to eat. I was just in the States for 3 weeks and didn’t touch a burger or fries! Yuck!!
*I feel prettier. I put more effort into wearing clothes I haven’t been able to, nd enjoy wearing makeup again
*I gave up dairy, alcohol, and loosely red meat (I love ramen which is pork based!)

The Start
I started to lose weight at the New Year. I didn’t feel very hopeful, but really wanted to stick with it. Ultimately, I’d love to lose 60 lbs, and focus on losing 20 at a time.

The Why
I struggled with my weight ever since I put on 50 lbs after graduating college summer 2008. For a long time I continued buying tiny clothes with the mindset of “it’ll fit… soon enough…” Fall 2009 I finally started buying bigger clothes, and it felt like I had been defeated.

For the rest of 2009 and 2010 I didn’t try too hard to diet. I put more effort into flattering clothes and standing in weird positions in pictures to look thin. Fall 2010 I did diet a bit and lost 10-15 lbs. Then while in Vegas with friends, we were in a limo in a parking lot and a guy yelled at me that I was a big fat buddha. And kept yelling it over and over. It was humiliating. I just laughed and said whatever but died inside. That would make most people start dieting and exercising more, but I just gave up. The goodness I felt from losing that 10 lbs was gone.

I moved to Japan March 2011 and naturally lost some extra weight. Smaller portions, and a lot of physical labor over the summer when I volunteered for a tsunami relief organization. That fall I visited the States for 3 months and gained it all back and then some. I was having family problems and missed Dan. I didn’t know how to deal with things. So most nights for dinner I ate fast food in my rental car and cried about it.

While perusing Facebook and eating a Carl’s Jr spicy chicken sandwich and criss-cut fries, I saw a grade school friend had just lost 50 lbs and posted before and after pics. It was incredible. I wanted to do that. We emailed a bit and she said how it couldn’t just be a diet, it had to be a lifestyle change, and told me about some of her changes. My heart sank. She’d really dedicated herself, and I didn’t think I had it in me to be so strict. I finished my burger and fries.

After the New Year I wanted to try again. Dan had been losing weight and my bad eating habits were rubbing off on him, which was just unfair to him. I decided for whatever reason to take a run. I ran 2.5 laps in my local park- about 9 minutes. I wanted to die. I hurt so bad everywhere I thought I was having a heart attack.

But then 2 days later I ran 11 minutes. And so began a love hate relationship with running, where I kept adding a minute or two. Today I can run 82 minutes without stopping, and I’m so pleased. Running has been my main form of exercise, supplemented with ballet classes and elliptical machines.

Dan and I started cooking at home, and cutting out dairy and alcohol. The pounds came off slow but steady. He’s the meat griller and I’m the veggie chopper. We’re one of those couples I mercilessly made fun of in college.

I also was incredibly motivated by a fantastic blog called Runs for Cookies (www.runsforcookies.com). A midwest girl lost over 100 lbs and struggles with distance runs and diet choices. I identified a lot with her and her cravings and overeating. I also enjoy Ali on the Run (www.aliontherunblog.com)

And that’s my story! 21 lbs down, 19 to go til I hit my next goal. I’ll update along the way as always πŸ™‚

Hawaii Highlights!

I posted some snippets from my trip to Kona with Dan’s family, but I thought I’d share some of the fun things we did!

Celebrated Dan’s 30th bday! His mom gave him a GoPro camera!

We went to a farmers market in Kona where I got a giant, delicious avocado, and Dan got me a velvety seed bracelet. We turned that avocado into some delicious guacamole!

Owww!!

Oy! I just went for my first run back from vacation! I ran about a mile before I gave up. A mere 2 weeks ago I was running 6, 7 miles like it was no big deal! I suppose there has been about a one week break from my last run. My body wanted to keep going but my muscles said no way.

I’m excited though, that some of my new purchases work great! I bought a pair of UnderArmour Cold Gear running tights from an outlet mall, and they are fantastic. A little more of a lighter weight than my Nike running tights, but work just as well in keeping cold wind off my legs. I also got a new iPod Nano, the kind that just clip onto you, with Nike+ built in. It took me a bit to find a good place for it- the clip isn’t super-duper strong. But I’m very pleased with both purchases πŸ™‚

And if you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m back in Japan! Kelsey took me to IHOP yesterday morning, our pre-flight tradition. I had 3 seats to myself! When you’re in the air for 10.5 hours, it’s such a luxury! I watched What’s Your Number and Life As We Know It, and a couple tv shows. Also napped and read a bunch of The Girl Who Played With Fire.

I breezed through immigrations and customs and before I knew it Dan and I were together again! We got all my bags home then went to our favorite ramen place by the apartment. After that I came home and showered, then fell into bed!

Vacation and baby shower pics coming as soon as I get the time to upload pictures, promise!

Thank You!!

It’s Tuesday night here in Seattle, which means tomorrow I will be on my way back to Japan! This trip was so incredibly amazing, it has completely recharged my batteries and filled my heart with so much happiness. I really owe some people big thank yous!

First of all my mom, who drove me everywhere, helped me plan my sister’s baby shower, and kept me company while in Portland. It’s always nice to be home and looked after by your mom every once in a while πŸ™‚

Also my gorgeous glowing sister! 7 months pregnant and still willing to drive me on errands and be a huge part of my week in town. It was so fun to plan her shower. I loved every second of it.
Photobucket

And finally my dearest best friend Kelsey, who is always ready and willing to drop everything she’s doing to get me from the airport, feed me, let me live on her couch, tag along with her to work, and be absorbed in her life while I’m in town. She even came down to Portland to help me with Lauren’s shower! I love her more than she knows and would be so lost without her! She is definitely family to me and I’m so glad she’s a part of my life!
Photobucket

I can’t wait til I’m back in Japan and can give a full update on all the wonderful things I did! Until then, I’m off to sleep then cross the international dateline πŸ™‚

A Week in Portland OR

My trip is flying by too quick! It’s Wednesday night, and we’re getting so much snow! It’s crazy.

I’ve been so busy it’s unreal. Every morning I run errand with my mom to prep for my sister’s baby shower. Then we work on some projects at home. So far we have a diaper cake and a balloon wreath! They both turned out so cute! In the evenings I meet with friends or my sister for dinner.

Tomorrow I was supposed to learn to ski but with all the snow I might not get to go! Just enjoying being with friends and family and getting everything ready for Lauren’s shower. Much more interesting entries and pictures soon to come!

Seattle Bound!

Wednesday morning is finally here, and it’s a glad and sad day. A sad day because I’m leaving Hawaii, and I won’t see Dan for 2 weeks. But a glad day because I’m headed to the Pacific Northwest to see friends and family!

Dan’s cousin and her fiance left Monday, and his parents and aunt left yesterday morning, so we had a full day in Hawaii just the 2 of us. The highlight of the day was definitely a rainforest tour by aqueduct with a company called Kohala Ditch Adventures. If anyone ever visits the Big Island I highly recommend it!

We started out by getting in an old war vehicle that took us off road and up into the hills. Then we went on a short hike to the irrigation canals. Boarded our kayak floats and we were on our way!

Dan and I ready to go! He was in charge of making sure we didn’t bump walls and lighting up tunnels!

Anyway, time to pack and catch a cab because I’m off to Seattle!

Dan & Co

Dan and I are still here in Hawaii, but I should mention we’re not alone! I’m here with some members of his wonderful family.

Apologies for the poor image, I tried to take a picture of a picture from us at the luau last night! Left to right is Monica’s fiancé Akash, me, Dan’s cousin Monica, her mother aka Dan’s Aunt Linda, Dan’s mom Cathy and stepdad Peter, and Dan.
Photobucket

I’ve never met a family as funny and welcoming as Dan’s. I feel like in the past, I may have passed up a family vacation with a boyfriend’s family but with Dan I have no hesitations. Everyone is so nice and great to talk to. They have definitely been a great aspect of our wonderful trip here!
