A Run Around my Block

Dan and I are in the thick of marathon training! It’s had its ups and downs, but we are logging crazy miles these days (though I had to take a week off for a tendonitis flareup- more on that another day!).

For the most part, all you know about my runs is that it generally looks something like this:
Photobucket

So on a day when my foot injury got the best of me and reduced me to walking, I thought I’d snap some pics on my phone of where I spend more and more of my time these days!

Since I started taking pictures when I was already out, we’ll start about three quarters of a mile into my run:
We’ve just crossed the one intersection I have to endure, and now run along one of Hachimanyama’s main roadways for a quarter mile:
Photobucket
A quarter mile later, I turn right and run for a few paces before turning into my favorite part: the gardens!
Photobucket
These gardens are awesome! They are planted every few weeks, and when I was out today I noticed they were clearing space for Christmas decorations! I run a lap around the garden, and then duck down a little path that leads to a giant clearing in the park:
Photobucket
Essentially I now run a big loop around a public park. Here are some things I see in my loop:
Playground. I try to get out as early as I can, because anytime after 2pm, the paths are jammed with parked bikes, mommies talking and a ridiculous amount of children!
Photobucket
No landscaping, but plenty of places to run around, or sit on a bench
Photobucket
Nice, car-free paths 🙂
Photobucket
A small cemetery that’s too pretty to be scary
Photobucket
A doggy park! There are 2 fenced-in areas, and I’m not sure what the difference is.
Photobucket
End of the park! From this point I turn right and run til I”m at the intersection again, where I cross to go home or go right to repeat my 1 mile loop in the park
Photobucket
But let’s pretend we’re going home! Here’s the one intersection where I can never catch the crosswalk in my favor
Photobucket
Another quarter mile or so along Hachimanyama’s mainway
Photobucket
Eventually I reach a path with some barriers to keep traffic out. It means I’m close to home!
Photobucket
This path may be almost a half mile. It stretches past a school (with a friendly guard who always smiles and waves at me!) and a golf driving range
Photobucket
Just past the driving range I make a right and am on Rokakoen’s main street. Here is the most slightest incline, where depending on how long I’ve been running feels ridiculously steep!
Photobucket
Home stretch! I can see our bike shop, grocery and post office!
Photobucket
This is my block! I start pulling out my phone to shut down my GPS tracker and the best part? It’s ever-so-slightly downhill!
Photobucket
Oh yes. The resident door to my building. I’m generally crying tears of joy at this point 😉

Fall in Seattle

I spent about half of my visit home in Seattle, where Dan and I were living before moving to Tokyo. I love the area and moving back after Japan is definitely a possibility! Anyway, the whole time I was in Seattle I was in the fabulous company of my best friend Kelsey. She just bought a house in Bothell and it was super exciting to stay with her and do our usual fun things: coffee, shopping, happy hour and tv! Oh, it’s a rough life! 😉 Here are some of my favorite Seattle moments 🙂

Reunited at last!!
Photobucket

Our first stop was Ooba’s for burritos. If you’re ever in Seattle, it’s a must!!
Photobucket

One of our many coffee dates! Enjoying some of Starbucks’ yummy fall drinks
Photobucket

She is too good to me: took me to Menchie’s for frozen yogurt at every possible chance!!
Photobucket

Sometimes Kelsey had to work, but that’s ok because I got to see my favoritest childhood friend Brita!
Photobucket

Unfortunately I didn’t get many pics of us together! 🙁 But we spent a few wonderful afternoons/ evenings together enjoying happy hours and just strolling through Seattle, one of my favorite fall activities 🙂

Kelsey is super supportive of my running endeavors and is even willing to lace up and join me on some runs because she’s awesome like that!

I took a fun weekend trip to the cute Bavarian village in the town of Leavenworth for Oktoberfest with Kelsey, her boyfriend Jim and friend Alyssa!
Photobucket
Because Oktoberfest is a huge deal up there, all the hotels were booked, so we camped! How does my first tent look? 🙂
Photobucket

On one of my last nights in town, our wonderful friend Allison was the recipient of 4 passes to a suite at Century-Link Field for a Seattle Sounders game, and invited us! It was a fantastic experience and had a great night out catching up with girlfriends!

I had such a wonderful time! I love Seattle any time of year, but as soon as there’s that chill in the air and your primary wardrobe turns from sandals and tanks to boots and scarves, I just get so excited! Until next time, Seattle! You’re very missed!

Fall in Oregon

I love living in Tokyo, but nothing beats fall in the Pacific Northwest. I spent a good chunk of time in Portland and Seattle with friends and family, and it was fantastic!

In Oregon, I got to visit with my girlfriend from college Carlie and meet her baby daughter Avery!

My friend Brittany works at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and let me backstage for a sneak peak!

This is slightly belated, but on October 20th, Nate turned 6 months old!

I could tell you all about Nate from birth to present, but since i missed a lot of that time it’d be a lot of texting to my sister and brother in law and question asking, so I will detail my amazing month and a half with Nate, starting with our big meeting!

Nate and I met at the Disneyland hotel Wednesday September 5th. What an awesome meeting place!! My sister’s family pulled up to their hotel room, and I threw open the door and scooped him up.

Our first official photo. He’d had a long travel day!

Happy 6 months, Nate, Nately, Starship, Mighty Nate. We sang and danced and napped and watched tv and went to the doctor and ate and napped and played and read stories and maybe even had time for another nap. But it was never enough time with you! Until we’re reunited again, your Aunt in Japan loves and misses you and thinks about you multiple times every single day. The same goes for your older sisters- I think of you 3 constantly.
I’m so proud to be their aunt!!!
Photobucket

Why do cats purr?

Photobucket

That made me giggle.

On that note, I have been reunited with my littlest love, Penny! Which can only mean one thing- I’m back home in Japan! It has been SO long since i have updated, I plan to do 2 catch-up entries- one for my time in Seattle and one for my time in Portland.

In the meantime, Dan has just left for work after a small, unsatisfyingly healthy breakfast of a protein shake, and I’m back at it with a 4 mile run. In other words, marathon training has begun! The rest of the day will be spent unpacking and buying a new phone to finally replace the one I lost in August, about a week or two before my trip.

I’ll go ahead and mention that I had a pretty good travel day yesterday! I went to school with Kelsey in the morning and then she took me to the airport 🙁 I didn’t like that part one bit!! I got checked into my flight and checked 2 bags. New requirements now demand bags weigh 50 lbs max, or you will be hit with a $200 fine. My duffel was no problem but I was worried about my suitcase. It came in at 49.5! Am I a packing ninja or what?! I was thrilled!

Made it through security, had my last bagel sandwich of my trip (delicious!) then got on my plane. I was towards the back, but didn’t mind because the middle seat was free so I could stretch out a bit! The flight was good and uneventful, with the exception of when they handed out meals, and a child a couple seats over from me threw up everywhere. Gross!

Dan met me at the airport and we made the trek home. Good to be back!

Fun in California!

In Santa Barbara we went to a beautiful wedding at the zoo
Photobucket

And we got to feed giraffes!

We even sneaked in a road trip to Vegas!
Photobucket

Ad of course, once we got that pesky half marathon out of the way, we got to play at Disneyland and California Adventure with my family!
Photobucket

I took lots of Disneyland photos and it would take a long time to post them all, so I welcome all of you to view them on my Flickr account by visiting http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurelshane/sets/72157631527361256/

I did it and it was awesome!

I spent WAY too much time being nervous and worried about this one! What a blast Dan and I had!

We woke up at an awful time like 4am Sunday morning (Sunday the 2nd, I know, I’m really behind!) and got ready. I got dressed and put my hair in a super tight ponytail and filled my SpiBelt with my phone, room key and Gu. I wasn’t hungry but I had a Larabar anyways. Then we were out the door!

Because Dan and I were staying at the Disneyland Hotel the following week for a family reunion (with a nice, overpriced view), we decided to slum it for the half marathon weekend and stayed at the Anaheim Super 8. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the race which was nice. It was still dark out and police were out, just starting to shut down streets for the run.

We arrived and walked by the finish line. I couldn’t wait to run right through it! We followed signs to our corral, which was in the back half of the race. I think we were in the second or third to last corral.

And so we jumped in our corral, along with 17,000 of our new running friends. Runners as far as the eye can see!
IMAG0233

At this point, I have typical runner worries: Getting burnt out too soon, walking too much, getting a blister or foot pain or any pain of some sort. Dan and I chatted and before we knew it, we were inching forward!
Approaching the start line!
IMAG0238
This is happening! I was so excited and nervous, I felt like I’d just drank 3 Red Bulls! I waited YEARS to do this! I first heard about a chance to run through Disneyland years ago, but knew I had no chance being so overweight. And after my stress fracture from walking most of the Seattle Rock n Roll Half Marathon, I pretty much shelved the idea for what seemed like forever.

But we were off! Dan took off and I tried to fall into a groove, a comfy pace I could maintain. It was PACKED and I did a lot of dodging around walkers and joggers. A few minutes later I was running comfortably, sometimes getting passed, sometimes doing the passing.

The first mile and a half was on the berm of California Adventure. Just through the empty streets of Anaheim. The weather was great; cool and no humidity. I got really excited as we approached the backstage entrance to California Adventure and had trouble maintaining my pace because I was so excited!
They brought out parade floats that people could take pictures with!
IMAG0242
There were employees everywhere offering smiles and high fives. It put me in a great mood. We ran past ride cars, decorations and more parade floats before approaching the actual park and leaving the backstage area.
I got a kick out of this sign. There was also an employee yelling, “what kind of a parade is this?!”
IMAG0244

All the rides were up and running, including the World of COlor water show!
IMAG0246
This was also my first look at the newest expansion to California Adventure, Cars Land!
IMAG0249
Sometimes it got a little slow because so many people wanted to stop and take pictures. Which makes sense, I mean how often do you get to run through a Disney park?! We ran past A Bug’s Land and Tower of Terror and the new Buena Vista Street, and then through a parade gate where we ran back stage as we approached DISNEYLAND.

I just knew this was going to be awesome and I wasn’t let down. We ran backstage along main street, behind City Hall, and emerged through the gates by the fire station. And then I was in Disneyland, running with a stupid smile on my face, but it was ok because thousands of other people knew exactly how I felt!
IMAG0251

We ran down Main Street and through Adventureland and Fantasyland. Then we got to run through the castle! They had a photographer stationed to take your picture, so when Dan and I get a look at those maybe I will post them. After that we ran through Tomorrowland and then backstage where we saw all sorts of interesting things. Halloween Decorations, giant hangars with parade floats, and a giant corral called Circle D Ranch, where all the Disney horses are kept!

After that, we exited the Disney parks, and I had about 9.1 miles to go. I was in great spirits though, and I did not feel like I’d just ran 4 miles!
IMAG0257

Miles 4-6 weren’t super interesting. We ran through the streets of Anaheim and had plenty of entertainment. High school bands, dance teams, cheerleaders and choirs cheered us on and entertained us. Other groups and clubs were there too, and we even ran through a vintage car show!
Polynesian dancers, some of our many entertainers
IMAG0260

I should also mention that we essentially zig-zagged up and down 3-4 blocks. For all the east straightaways, we were running directly into the rising sun. It was SO bright I just stared at my feet for 2 miles!! Might need to look into some shades to wear for running!
IMAG0262
I’m still feeling really good! I had a Gu and it made me painfully thirsty, but there was a water station about 10 minutes later. I never did have my second Gu just because I didn’t want to deal with the thirst. Also, this is the only race where I took advantage of nearly every water station! I got a water right away and a Gaterade at the end. Worked out well and I didn’t feel too thirsty! My feet didn’t even feel too tired but my hip felt just a touch sore and I knew it would stiffen up later that day.

Around 8 miles we ran past Honda Center. Go Ducks!
IMAG0261
My favorite part about this run was getting to run through Angel Stadium. The approach wasn’t great following Honda Center, we ran along a dried riverbed on a dirt path, so lots of dust and dirt got kicked up. But at mile 9 we reached the stadium!
IMAG0263

Again, it was hard to keep my pace because I was so pumped up!
IMAG0265
Once inside we ran around the diamond and got high fives from boy and girl scouts and other spectators. This pictures didn’t turn out great but hey, I was trying to run!
IMAG0267

We even ran past a camera that put our pictures on the jumbotron! I think I did see myself go by but I’m not 100% sure. I wore my race participant tee shirt along with thousands of others, so I didn’t particularly stand out!
IMAG0270

After running under the jumbotron and out the stadium, we were back on the streets on Anaheim and passed a Mile 10 sign. 3.1 to go!
I am still in awe of all the volunteers that kept us entertained, made signs, danced, sand, made music, handed out water cups etc!
These cheerleaders had some funny Disney cheers to keep us running
IMAG0275

I hit Mile 11 and started losing steam. On the one hand I was disappointed in myself for being SO close to the end (2.1 to go!) and feeling so drained and ready to take a break, but on the other hand I was very happy I made it this far without feeling burned out. I took a 20 second walk break through a water station and kept on trucking, though my pace was much slower.

I reached Mile 12 and took another 20 second walking break, ran some more and then ANOTHER 20 second walking break. I was fading fast, but I was so close to being done! I felt hungry and a little tired from not enough sleep.

Back to running though, and soon enough I hit the 13 mile sign!! .1 miles to go!!!!
IMAG0276

I ran my little heart out and crossed the finish line. I did it! DIsneyland half was down in the books and I felt amazing! Not TOO tired, not in pain, not dying of thirst. I felt amazing!

I got my medal and walked through the finisher’s chute, where they give you water, gatorade, a banana etc. Once I made it past there, I found Dan right away. We hugged and high fived. Got our picture taken and went out to get some space from the crowds.
WOOHOO!!!!!!
IMAG0278

And now the question I’ve been texted the most: What was my time?

My time was 2:43:48!

I am ECSTATIC about this! Originally, I wanted my goal to be 2:30, and my elite, take-no-prisoners goal to be 2:23 (an hour under my Seattle half time). But due to the heat and humidity of Tokyo’s summer, I didn’t train as much as I had hoped, and decided I’d be happy with anything under 3 hours. So to exceed my expectations by over 16 minutes left me buzzing with pride! Dan finished in 2 hours and 1 minute and some-odd seconds which was also fantastic!

Our run mapped out!
Picture 3

Dan and I just had an amazing time at our friend’s wedding in Santa Barbara, and are tucked in for the night because we’re up at 4am tomorrow for our Disneyland half marathon! I’m excited, nervous and hope my legs are ready!!

It begins at 5:45am, and our wave is starting tentatively at 6:05am. I am hoping to finish by 9:05am! The original plan was to finish in 2 hours and 30 minutes, but after a hot summer with fewer anticipated runs, and staying up late tonight, we decided to push our goals back and just enjoy this race. We’ll be fierce for our next half in January 😀

After our race we’re off to Vegas! If we survive, that is!

Ok, I lied. Here is another update, and we have not left Tokyo yet.

Last night I just couldn’t sleep. It is so hot here! After watching a few too many episodes of Breaking Bad, I knew I had to move on to other methods of entertainment. I decided to clean up my craft room a bit, since it was its usual messiness.

Something that always drives me crazy is my ribbon drawer. I LOVE ribbon, for bows and a little texture on my Cricut cards. I have lots of spools, and I just have them all tossed into a plastic drawer where they tangle and unravel.
Photobucket

Thanks to the website Pinterest, I decided to create a ribbon dispenser. I took an old shoebox, and then I didn’t have a dowel, so I used a knitting needle which is a size I don’t often use. Pierced the side of the shoebox with the knitting needle, and started stringing my spools on!
Knitting needle pierced into the shoe box
Photobucket
Strung on my spools, and let a bit of ribbon overhang
Photobucket
I closed the lid and was all done! Organized ribbons, and I can see everything at once!
Photobucket
Well, not everything. I actually have about double this amount of ribbon! So I will possibly make another one. My next step will be to wrap the box in cute paper!

Someone recently asked if I’m still making greeting cards. The answer is definitely yes! Production has slowed somewhat, as my craft room is very hot in the summer! But her are a few cards I’ve made the past few months:
My sister’s first mother’s day card

A graduation card for my amazing friend Sandra, who is now a licensed pharmacist!

A baby card for my expecting boss!

Last Japan Update!

I know, it’s been too long! We’ve been so busy because in a week, we’ll be on our way to California!

First off, what’s that? You want more baby Nate pictures? I love what fans of my nephew you all are!! ;D

Dan and I got annual passes to the Mori Tower. This way, for the next year we can explore the museum, art gallery, enjoy the lounge on the 54th floor and of course the view from the helipad!
We paid the helipad a visit one night when I got off work, since my work is down the block a bit. Here’s Dan and J.R. enjoying the Disney music they play

One night after work I was randomly treated to a beautiful fireworks show!

Remember my friend Madeleine from Ishinomaki volunteering? We had a reunion because she returned from her visit home, where she got to see the Olympics in person! We had a summer dinner date last week.

We had dinner at a cute restaurant called Ivy Place in Nakameguro

Thanks to our friend J.R., Dan and I have a new weekly tradition. We go to a delicious onigiri restaurant every week in Otsuka. It’s like a giant piece of sushi, and you can choose what they stuff it with!
Photobucket

This past Sunday, Dan, J.R. and I went to Summer Sonic, a fun music festival with lots of good bands: Garbage, Green Day, Ke$ha, Gym Class Heroes, Pitbull, and many more. What I loved was that it was on the beach!

I was most excited to see Ke$ha!

There was also a silent disco. It was the first time I’ve ever seen one and it was crazy! It’s like a night club setting, but instead of amplified music, everyone listens through headphones! People bouncing to the same rhythm and randomly yelling “yeah!” at the same time. Hilarious!
Dan and I at the silent disco
Photobucket

And that’s what we’ve been busy doing! And to add to the busy, remember when Dan and I went to see my friend Christine do tanabata dancing at a festival?
Christine and I
Photobucket
Well, I’ve joined her dance group! All the girls are so sweet and nice and the class is really fun! It’s out at the air force base which is a bit of a trek, but very well worth it!

The next week we’ll finish training for our half marathon, pack, clean house and fly out! My next update will be from California, Nevada, Washington or Oregon! 😀
