Welcome to Movember 2013

This is Dan participating in his first Movember in 2008. Please consider making a donation of any size to his fund raising efforts this year! Just click here!
 photo mo08.jpg

I technically met my husband Dan at a board game party in Vancouver, Washington in spring of 2007, but I didn’t really get to know him until early 2009, when we both happened to be in Las Vegas.

Ah, young love. This was the first time he visited my apartment in Portland, March 2009.
 photo 2659_577085883298_2330119_n.jpg
I clearly had no idea what our first November Movember would bring us.

Then this happened.
 photo 21847_646098326808_536423_n.jpg

Movember has become a hugely popular fund raiser, but even as recently as 2009, it didn’t have as many supporters. Which left me with a boyfriend with this abomination on his face. I couldn’t bring myself to embrace the mo’.

But let me back up and explain Movember a little better.

Movember is a global charity that began in 2003 with a goal to “change the face of mens health”. Any man can participate, as long as they begin the month of November with a cleanly shaven face. Also known as “No-Shave November”, these men (also known as Mo Bros) grow mustaches that get people’s attention. When asked about their budding mo’s, a Mo Bro will tell them about Movember and how they are raising funds for mens health.

Women can also get involved though! Mo Sistas are supporters of Mo Bros and help with fund raising (or in my case, not shaving their legs!).

I was dubbed a Mo Sista and crowned Miss Movember 2009!
 photo 21847_646098331798_3151215_n.jpg

Funds raised from Movember are donated to programs to combat prostate and testicular cancer.

As I was saying, I couldn’t completely embrace the mo in 2009. I didn’t get it, despite helping fund raising efforts.

In 2010 Dan and I were living apart, so I didn’t get much time with him and his mo. I actually never saw it in person!
 photo 155013_727279449188_7932725_n.jpg

And again, in 2011 I was back in the states for a visit, but here is a photo of Dan at a work retreat

At this point in time, I’m slowly embracing the mo. I know it’s as important to Dan as my Portland Pink Sox Race for the Cure team, and I want to support his efforts. And of course, it’s for a good cause!

So we decide to get more creative for 2012.

But here’s the thing about Movember. It goes everywhere you do for that month.
Like family vacations to Kyoto where you were planning on snapping your Christmas card photo… til you remember…
 photo 189767_10100484658732008_1918520993_n.jpg

Here I am, counting down the days left of Movember… you can just tell by the look on my face 😉
 photo 28750_3995210040480_1484431248_n.jpg

And so, this November first started out like any November 1st- Dan was clean shaven.
 photo 1384154_10100882558133418_247623085_n.jpg

And while I might not be crazy about some of Dan’s mustaches, I love his dedication to it, that he has fun with it, that he fund raises for a good cause. And that’s something I can always get behind!

So I encourage you to take the time and donate to Movember and support Dan’s efforts. Dan is not very materialistic and whenever it’s his birthday or Christmas, he never wants anything. But this is something that I know would make his day Movember! He is kicking serious tail this year, and is on a team that has already raised almost $4,000! That’s incredible. And I’d love to have you be a part of it. I also always donate back when friends have charities/ philanthropies they are crusading for!

So, help a mo out. Let’s change the face of mens health!

Alternate working title- Nobody Puts Peacock in the Van!!

This is an event put on by the Samurai Hash House Harriers. (More on hashing here). A hashathon is a hash where you run 3 legs in one day totaling 26.2 miles/ 42 kilometers, or a marathon, give or take some distance. It’s a day long event beginning at 8am when the hares take off to lay Leg #1’s trail and we all follow 12 minutes after. All our belongings are loaded into a support van (or 2!) and drive off to the first exchange. After leg #1 is lunch and a little break, run leg #2, a break and finally leg #3. It’s definitely a day-long affair.

Dan and I signed up for this a few weeks ago. I was always nervous, but serious nerves struck me this past week. This wasn’t just a 26.2 mile run. Samurai hashing is known for never ending stairs, tough mountain climbs and making you crawl through bushes. I was bracing for the worst. Also, for everyone who finishes all 3 legs, they print everyone’s hash names on the back of this year’s hashathon shirt. I really wanted “Bloody Peacock” to be emblazoned on cotton!!

On Friday, Dan and I still had to run Friday hash, and my friend Amanda and her boyfriend Steven were in town visiting. I feel so bad I was so worried about hashathon while she was here, I don’t think I was very fun! They’re in Kyoto right now and we’ll be reunited in a few days!
Not a great pic, but Dan (in the grey and orange jacket) and I at Friday hash, trying to get everyone excited to run in the cold wind! Amanda’s on the right in blue!

After Friday hash, Amanda and Steven went to a local hotel in Tokyo, and Dan and I took a train for a little over an hour to Isehara. With hashathon starting at 8am, we’d have to leave our apartment at 5:40am! No thanks!
Our tiny accommodations. Dan and I got separate rooms so we’d have some space!

That bed was hard as a rock! After not the greatest sleep, I got up and met Dan, and we headed out to the start.
Everybody participating! (except Dan and his 2 friends who went to go buy a drink!)

Before I knew it we were on the move! My strategy was to take it as easy as possible. I had nothing to prove, I just wanted to finish comfortably, and didn’t want to injure myself before Goofy in January.

We mark our trails in chalk and often times some hashers race one another. Here some guys left their hash name initials. Dan is MM!

Leg #1 was not nearly as bad as I thought. I was incredibly slow because I was waiting for a tough hill. There were a bunch of stairs but that was it!
And nice views!

After this picture, I learned I was last to arrive to the exchange point. I didn’t mind- I’m an overweight runner and I’m used to being in the back of the pack. And I didn’t want a long break because the longer I sit, the less I want to get back up!

But everyone fussed over me. They asked if I was ok. If I was hurt. If I want to sit in the van. If I want to quit. No, no, NO! I was fine! If anything I was in better shape than everyone else because I took it easy! I came in about 10 minutes after the last people, a group of 3 girls. I just wanted to sit and eat my granola bar and have some Powerade but they kept huddling around me trying to get me to eat a ham and potato salad sandwich. BLEH!!!

Leg #2 was about to start and the hares took off. Again, 2 of the coordinators tried to stick me in a van. I calmed them down by saying “I’ll try leg #2” instead of my usual “I’m going to finish all 3!”. We took off for leg #2!

This was by far the hardest. Leg #1 was only about 8.3 miles. This one was 10. And absurdly, insanely steep. We were climbing a mountain! Sometimes on cement, sometimes on really loose, fine dirt/ soil. Up, up, up we went.
 photo 1425784_10100896378562168_144393316_n.jpg

At one point, I ran into Dan on trail! That was a nice surprise. We ended up walking most of leg #2 together, just chatting.
Dan admiring our view of the ocean.
 photo 1395957_10100896378622048_661239718_n.jpg

Then towards the end Dan said he wanted to get back to running since we weren’t going up hill anymore, and we parted ways. I also picked up the pace a bit- now we were running down a steep, twisty hill. I hated it!

As I was nearing the second exchange point, Dan texted me to warn me that the pack already took off for leg #3 and they really wanted to stick me in the van. The heads up was nice. When I reached the exchange point I was all business. The helpers (and as annoying as it was, that’s all they were trying to do, just help) swooped in on me and asked if I was ok. A nice gal said she would take the train with me if I didn’t want to ride in the van. A few people had called it quits after the 2 legs, and honestly, my feet really hurt and I was thinking about it, but when so many people wanted to throw me in that van I thought no way! I’m in it to win it!

So I just went as quick as I could through the exchange point. My bag was laid out waiting for me (thanks volunteers!), and I had been running with a Camelbak backpack with a bladder for water. With the last leg being only 7 or so miles, I ditched the backpack, grabbed some money, granola bar, train pass, my cell phone and backup battery, crammed it all in my Spibelt, and told them I’m good and ran the heck out of there! Nobody puts Peacock in the van!!!

Once the adrenaline of evading volunteers wore off, I realized how bad my feet hurt and how tired I was. A very common problem with runners training for a marathon is weight gain and I am definitely suffering as of late. The sun started to set and I’d get a few sprinkles of rain here and there. The good thing about leg #3 was it was in the city, so no hills! The bad thing was that the hares who laid the trail didn’t use crosswalks! It was terrifying trying to get across busy roads as the sun was setting. I was not a fan AT ALL!!!

Dan texted when he got into the finish and I was so jealous! But alas I finished too, and wouldn’t you believe it, I wasn’t even last! I guess all my saved up energy kept me on an even keel, as I ended up passing some walkers/ crawlers.

My hashathon trail!
 photo ScreenShot2013-11-09at110619PM.png

I did it! I completed my first hashathon! I got lots of high-5s and of course, everyone asked me if I was ok. Some people were highly doubting I completed all 3 legs. I kicked off my shoes and put on flip flops and a jacket, then sat around with friends and celebrated the awful torture we’d just put our bodies through.

Samurai had rented us a conference room in a building which was nice to finish at; it was warm and plenty of chairs for all of us to sit. We indulged in some American snacks bought from one of the military bases (Cheetos! Little Debbie!) and had a beer. I’ll be honest and say it stung a little when no body thought I’d finish. I know they were trying to be helpful, but it would have been nice to get a “you can do it!” instead of “good try, get in the van”. And now all the 2013 Samurai Hashathon shirts will say Bloody Peacock on them, and no one will ever forget I dominated that course!

Dan and I began our long trip home. It was now an additional 26+ miles out! We bought reserved car seats so we could stretch out and be comfortable. We chatted for a bit but then, after a marathon hash and terrible night’s sleep, I conked out til we got back to Shinjuku
 photo ScreenShot2013-11-09at112003PM.png

Let’s just say I slept amazing last night! A cushy bed and a kitty at my feet!

First off, I had to share my most recent care package. While at Disney World with my mom I was interested in a Dooney & Bourke handbag that had Minnie Mouse bows all over it. The shop on Main Street had a decent selection of Disney Dooney bags, but I really had my heart set on this one. I asked the lady working and she said it was an older style. I do have a Disney Dooney that’s adorable and covered in Disney characters, but I wanted something a little more subtle (but that still had that Disney POP!) and bigger.

My mom found it online!

I just love it! I keep looking over and admiring it today. I can’t wait to show it off at Marathon weekend at Disney World! So big thanks to my mom for coming through with a beautiful gift.

Anyways, I heard that many people go all out on Halloween at Tokyo Disneyland, and since this is likely my last Halloween in Japan I wanted to see for myself. It was my friend Jenna’s birthday so we went to the park for the day!

All decorated for Halloween!

Almost immediately we started seeing costumes!

Mary Poppins!
 photo photo3-2.jpg

The park was packed, so we decided to just have a relaxed day of wandering around and enjoying the sights, instead of trying to cram in as many rides as possible. It was an excellent day for people watching!

They also had their Halloween parade which was cute!

They also had pumpkin whoopee pies that came with a frosting pen for decorating. I made a Jack Skellington pie!

It was a fun, relaxing day. And the weather was perfect! And now I present, some epic costumes:

A Weekend with the In-Laws

Dan’s dad and stepmom came to visit Tokyo which is pretty awesome! His dad was just passing through on his way to Beijing for business, but his stepmom is here for a few more days.

It’s neat to have family come visit. My mom will be visiting Japan, but after I’m no longer living here, and my sister isn’t in a position to visit, as her son is still a baby. The other neat part is that Dan’s father lived here for a few years before Dan was born, and still knows Japanese and a general sense of what’s where and getting around on the trains.

On Saturday we participated in a Moffitt time-honored tradition: drinking. We pub crawled through Omote-sando and Shibuya, and finished the night in Shinjuku. But we had to start the day with a bowl of ramen from one of our favorite restaurants!
Dan with Ann and Bob
 photo photo1-1.jpg
Our first stop was Brimmer Beer Box where we shared a pitcher and sat outside. It was such a nice fall day! After that we went to Craft Heads in Shibuya. I hadn’t been so I was excited to try it, and even more excited to see an ale I’ve been dying to try was on the menu!

My Pumpking. If Thanksgiving/ fall had a flavor, it would be this beer.
 photo photo3-1.jpg

While at the bar, Ann, a connoisseur/ importer/ exporter of wine, taught us the way to properly toast someone. Eye contact is key!
 photo photo4.jpg
We went on to a pub called Aldgate in Shibuya, and down the street to a yakiniku (Korean BBQ) restaurant for dinner. We wrapped up the night meeting some friends of Ann’s at the Tokyo Park Hyatt. I love their lounge! Great drinks and a beautiful view of the town. I still can’t believe this is my town sometimes.
 photo photo-2copy.jpg

Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures from Sunday, but we went out to Hakone and then had dinner at a tempura restaurant. Nothing too special. My running did suffer this weekend (I was supposed to run 7 miles Saturday and 10 miles Sunday), but we got caught up in the fun of having visitors in town and didn’t do either runs. So luckily when I woke up today (Monday) I busted out 7 miles, and it wasn’t terribly painful! I’ll get my 10 miler out of the way tomorrow.

It’s going to be a fun week! Ann is still here and we’ll spend time together Tuesday, then Wednesday I’m meeting girlfriends for a day at Tokyo Disneyland! Thursday Dan and I are having friends over for some Halloween fun, and Friday our running group is having a costume run. I love Halloween!

I even had time to make a couple cards last week!
 photo photo-2.jpg

And now, to close with another Penny picture, this is what I woke up to Sunday morning. Yeah, no run was happening, I just stayed in bed with my kitty!

Back in Tokyo

I have been so busy playing catch up on my blog that I’ve actually been back in Japan for 2 weeks! I was home for a day before Dan and I headed south to Kyoto for Nash Hash, a nation-wide hashing event. Since then, Dan and I settled into a nice routine. We’re officially training for Goofy’s Race & a Half Challenge, and up early every morning to get our training runs in before Dan goes to work.

I’m also hard at work hoping to finish my nephew Nate’s stocking before Christmas, and we’ve enjoyed laying low the past week before a parade of visitors arrive. Tonight Dan’s dad and stopmom come, and a few days after they leave my college friend Amanda is coming back (she visited in May)with her boyfriend! Busy but fun, the way I like it!

My training got off to a rough start because it’s my absolute least favorite time of year- new shoe time!

My shoes were past their prime when I ran my 10k in early September. But I wanted them to see me through my trip home, so then I ran Tower of Terror 10 Miler in them. After that race, they were so dead I just left them in the hotel room.

No midfoot traction left!
 photo IMAG2299.jpg

I was really satisfied running in these shoes, far more than the Nike Lunarlons. So I went ahead and bought another pair. The good news is they are considered an old model now, so they were about half off! The bad news is they didn’t have insane pink in my size 🙁
Newly broken in with about 34 miles on them
 photo photo2.jpg

The weather has definitely changed here. Dan and I went to a hash on Sunday and it poured all day and night. What do you do when you’re surrounded by cold, wet hashers?

Sell fleece scarves!
 photo photo-1-1.jpg

After the hash we went to Antenna America, a fun bar in Yokohama that sells a wide variety of beers bottled and on tap. They were challenging patrons to try their IPA; with every pint purchased 100 yen was donated to providing books for the less fortunate through a program called Room to Read. Dan and his friends and fun with this. To learn more about Room to Read, check out their website.

And guess who finished off the keg…

Kidding! It was a group effort

Needless to say, everyone had a good time!

And of course, with the rain, and not owning a dryer in Japan, I can no longer hang my laundry lines outside! Bye bye shower space!
 photo photo1.jpg
I’ll end with this picture of Penny. She wouldn’t let me take a photo of my shoes! You’ll also note the graham crackers behind her- I went out to the military base to grab those for my famous pumpkin dip I’ll be making in the coming weeks! I love baking in the fall!

Darn ALL The Spammers!!!

Hello my fabulous readers,

Lately my blog has been pummeled with spam. Sifting through and deleting comments isn’t how I want to spend my morning!

I have added a capcha to my page. When you leave a comment, there’s a simple addition problem to solve. Please answer it so your comment will post! I’m hoping this will keep the spammers at bay and I can eventually delete it.

Also, if you blog I added CommentLUV so you can share your page with others.
Thanks! ;D

In my last entry I blogged all about my races at Tower of Terror, so now I’ll tell you all about the fun stuff my mom and I did!

But it starts with the not-so-fun: waking up at 2-something in the morning for the airport shuttle! Oh it was rough. But what was really nice was my mom wanted to make the trip special for us, so she upgraded all our flights to first class!

I know, this is tacky, taking a picture of first class. But it’s a rare thing for me!
 photo IMAG2201.jpg

We had a few hours’ layover in Houston, then were on our way to Orlando! The Magical Express grabbed us at the airport and dropped us off at our resort, Caribbean Beach. At this point we’d been awake since 2:30am, so we promptly said good night and went to our rooms.

The next morning, Friday, brought excitement- our first ADR (advanced dining reservation)! Believe it or not, Disney has some amazing food options and signature dishes, and they’re often so popular you need a reservation in advance. Our first ADR was the Kona Cafe at the Polynesian resort.
We arrive early and walked around a bit. It’s so pretty here!
 photo IMAG2210.jpg
So, why Kona Cafe? They’re known for their Tonga Toast
 photo IMAG2212.jpg
My diabetes-inducing breakfast. It was amazing!
 photo IMAG2214.jpg
After breakfast we headed to the runners’ expo at the Wide World of Sports complex. It was probably one of the best expo experiences I’ve had with RunDisney- smaller, saw friends, less crowded, got shirts and bibs, checked out booths, and even got the infamous RunDisney shoes (pictured a few paragraphs below)! My mom was a good sport and waited in line with me, all the while sales clerks were calling out sizes they were sold out of. But we finally got to the front of the line and my mom liked them so much she got a pair too!
 photo IMAG2217.jpg
After the expo we dropped our stuff off at the hotel then went to spend the rest of the day at EPCOT. I know it’s not a favorite with many, but I love EPCOT. You can truly stroll about and admire everything at a slower pace than other Disney parks.
 photo IMAG2227.jpg
It was a little frustrating being at a theme park the day before race day. No fancy foods (but it was Food & Wine Festival!), no alcohol (Mexico’s margaritas!), no new clothes (sorry new Disney sneakers) and trying to rest the feet (not about to stand in line for Test Track or Soarin’). But luckily EPCOT has tons of lengthy, high-capacity sit down rides (namely Ellen’s Energy Adventure, a 45 minute air conditioned heaven).

We hit up plenty of those rides and window shopped, then made our way to Italy for our ADR at Via Napoli. We had a table by the window which was nice for people/ park watching.
Our view
 photo IMAG2233.jpg

After dinner we called it quits, since we had an early wake up call for the 5k the next day. As for Saturday, besides the running I took it really easy. After the 5k my mom and I had a really good breakfast at the Grand Floridian Cafe, then headed back to our hotel. I took a long nap (since I’d be up all night running), then just tried to stay hydrated and enjoyed the last few days of my Netflix account (no Netflix in Japan!). I met my mom at 5 and she had made an ADR at Shutters, where I had a really good bowl of pasta with sausage and shrimp. After that it was race time!

Sunday, I was ready for fun. I met my mom outside our rooms with my new RunDisney shoes and finisher shirt on. We were off to the Magic Kingdom! We stopped into the Starbucks on Main Street and grabbed some breakfast, then sat outside Casey’s to eat and enjoy the park waking up.
This jerk was greedy for bites of my muffin. Then he bit me!
 photo IMAG2263.jpg
After breakfast we rode rides and snacked on junk food all day. I got a coveted ADR at the newly remodeled California Grill, and we didn’t want to have a heavy lunch before then.
The best way to cool off- Dole Whip!
 photo IMAG2281.jpg
Lovely Main Street in the fall
 photo IMAG2267.jpg

Our Magic Kingdom day was incredibly relaxed. We wandered. Rode rides. Ate. Lucky for me my mom was happy to explore gift shops with me, something I inexplicably love to do. After a fair amount of walking we’d duck in for an air conditioning break and look at all the goodies for sale. We might have stared for quite a while at the confectioner case in New Fantasyland…

 photo IMAG2268.jpg
It was pretty hot out, but I enjoyed sitting in the sun and just relaxing. Especially relaxing my feet!
New Fantasyland. and RunDisney shoes!
 photo IMAG2271.jpg
A perfect day at the Kingdom!
 photo IMAG2279.jpg
At one point, the People Mover broke down for a few minutes. In a dark, cool hallway. It was heaven!
 photo IMAG2273.jpg
Alas it was time for dinner! We rode the monorail to the Contemporary resort and up to the top floor. My mom wore a sundress and I changed from my RunDisney shirt to a nice top, but that didn’t necessarily hide our matching, bright red sneakers. We had a good laugh about being in a nice restaurant with them on. We were right by the window and had gaping views of Magic Kingdom and the Grand Floridian, and a bit of the Polynesian.

And at last, I got to enjoy a cocktail on vacation- a sake martini
 photo IMAG2283.jpg
My main course, the dragon roll. It was SO good.
 photo IMAG2285.jpg

After dinner we went out to the observation deck and took some photos. The view was amazing!

 photo IMAG2291.jpg
You could see all of Disney World, and I pointed out all 4 parks to my mom. I wish I’d brought a better camera to capture the view!

At this point, we were exhausted. It was only 7 or 8, but we had another 3am shuttle to catch to the airport. We each grabbed something sweet to enjoy before bed…
 photo IMAG2296.jpg

And that was our trip! People ask me all the time why I love Disney so much. They ask if I hit my head. If something traumatic happened in my lifetime. If I have weird issues with my family. If I wish I was a child. The answer to all those things is no! I really can’t explain what I love about Disney, but it’s special to me, and I’m so glad I got to share this trip with my mom. It was a really good weekend and going through all the photos again makes me miss it even more!

I had a really great trip to Orlando with my mom, and I want to tell you all about it, but I think it would be the longest post ever! So I’m breaking it up into 2 parts, my race reports and the fun stuff we did.

First up: the Disney Happy Haunted 5k!
This was my first time ever doing a Disney 5k, and honestly, I wish I picked a different one. All RunDisney 5ks go through to theme parks except this one! It was sold as a “trail run around the Wide World of Sports Complex”. Before I signed my mom up, I asked someone on a forum if it was hilly, and they said, “heck no, flat as a pancake”. So, while not understanding what made it a trail run, I signed us up.

We met outside our rooms at about 5:45am and took a bus to Wide World of Sports. It was still dark out! We walked into the facility and I got so excited. I just love Halloween and Disney, and here were 2 of my favorite things colliding!

My mom took this picture. Halloween Mickey and me!
 photo 1208495_10100847293823378_1000368369_n.jpg

We wandered around and I found some running friends here and there. We got to watch the sun rise, which was gorgeous!
 photo IMAG2236.jpg
Before we knew it, it was time to head to our corral! As we were lined up, the announcers told us a special visitor would be making an appearance, and the Headless Horseman rode by! It was really neat to see, but I didn’t get a picture of it.

Before I knew it we were off! The 5k was pretty uneventful. We also learned why they call it a trail run- it’s sandy! Sand got everywhere! The course was narrow and I just wasn’t a fan. I also felt bad this was my mom’s first Run Disney event, and I hope I can convince her they’re usually so much better.

 photo ScreenShot2013-10-17at20721AM.png
We finished and got cute medals!
 photo ScreenShot2013-10-17at20735AM.png

We got our usual Run Disney snack boxes and sat for a moment to get organized, but then we were off to an amazing brunch at the Grand Floridian Cafe! More on that in my other entry though.

I lazed around in my air conditioned room all day drinking tons of water and resting for the 10 Miler that night. Around 5pm, I met my mom and we grabbed dinner at Shutters, a restaurant at our hotel. I got a big Cajun style bowl of pasta with sausage and shrimp, it was delicious!

After that I went back to my room to take it easy for about an hour and let everything digest, then I started getting dressed. My friend Staci came and met me at the hotel and then we went to the bus stop together. It was a quick ride and before I knew it we were spilling off the bus and into total race chaos!

This was about 2 hours of milling about, chatting with people, taking pictures and a final pit stop before hitting up the corrals. My online running group got together for a photo. Thanks for the picture Heather! She blogs over at Through Heather’s Looking Glass

After our group photo we all headed to our corrals. Once we were all in, we were walked, corral by corral, to the start, which was almost a mile away! Basically the perimeter of one of DIsney’s Hollywood Studios’ parking lots.

More waiting. I was in Corral E, but luckily there was only 3-4 minutes between the top 5 corrals. After E, I think it was 5 minutes. Before I knew it, we were off! As soon as we left Hollywood Studios, we proceeded up on onramp. Not only was it hot and humid, but the onramp encircled a small swamp/ pond, and in the middle was a flame thrower that would shoot a giant flame in the sky every 30 seconds. You could feel the heat and it was miserable!

Once on the main road, we ran to Animal Kingdom. This was 4 miles of torture- 2 miles out and 2 miles back. It felt never ending! It was really hot, did I mention that? I was only about 5k in when I was ready for a break, so I did something I’ve never done before- stopped for a character photo!
 photo ScreenShot2013-10-17at21015AM.png
I took this because I knew Dan would be proud. I actually can’t stand being anywhere near costumed characters, but this was so quick it was perfect. I didn’t have to touch him or anything, I just posed for a picture and ran off!

At mile 5 we had another “trail run”, except this time not only was the ground sandy and all uneven, it was dark! Come on Disney, light that area up!! Again it was really narrow. I would have much preferred running around Animal Kingdom than Wide World of Sports, but oh well.

Once in WWoS we circled some fields and then the baseball diamond. Sidenote- this race was themed very well. There were a lot of character stops and decorations. Inside the baseball diamond alarms were going off, and on the Jumbotron there was a picture of an alien and the loudspeakers were saying an alien escaped and to flee the area. Kinda fun to experience when surrounded by thousands of runners!

I hit up a few more character stops along the way- zombie football players, the gravediggers from Haunted Mansion, and Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog.

Here’s a random shot maybe 7 miles in. I was having fun!

By mile 8 I was really ready to be done. I reminded myself that my photo stops were breaks and pushed on. Alas, we returned to Hollywood Studios! But we had to run past the flame thrower again which is even worse 9 miles in!

We entered Hollywood Studios by the Lights Motor Action! Stunt Show, and ran through the Backlot Tour, which I thought was really neat. I was completely out of steam at this point, but knew we had to be close. We ran past Mickey’s big sorcerer hat and past Toy Story Mania, then ducked into a behind the scenes area.

We ran down a long passage and I saw bright colorful lights at the end and thought, “This is it, we’re done!” So I booked it for a couple minutes, only to discover it was a band stand!!” Oh I cursed everything at that moment! But then I turned a corner and was about 100 yards from the finish. I had conquered the Tower of Terror 10 Miler!
 photo ScreenShot2013-10-17at21000AM.png
Also, this was totally my last run in my running shoes. They were so dead, dirty, out of cushioning, etc. I actually just left them in my hotel room when I checked out! RIP pink New Balances!

Once I stopped running, I didn’t feel great. I got my medal (Super cool, it glows in the dark and has a dropping elevator!) and was herded through the finishers chute. Got a water and Gatorade and snack box. Walked up a giant hill and got a finishers photo.
 photo ScreenShot2013-10-17at20756AM.png
From there we had to walk up another hill! Oh, who would do this torture to tired little runners?! After a while I decided to wait for my friend, who was having her hand looked at int he medical tent. I sat on the curb, still in the backstage area of the park, basically behind the Tower of Terror. I drank Gatorade and felt better.

We left soon after. We were so hot and tired. I thought our bus would be empty since we were leaving the after party so early, but it was packed! Many runners shared our sentiment.

Would I do this race again? Totally! It was really fun, I loved all the costumes, and it was my first time running in costume. I don’t have too many complaints. The weather, but Disney can’t do much about that. Maybe scrap the whole “Trail run” thing. No one likes the sand!!

My next Florida race is Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge. Eek!

Pints to Pasta 10k 2014

It was my second year running the Pints to Pasta 10k, and I loved it just as much as the first year (if not more!)

Last year I ran with Dan and his mother, but since he was back in Japan I went with my college friend Thomas. He’s a blast to go to races with because he’s a speed demon, and since he always finishes before me I get to have a fan cheering for me at the finish!

I wasn’t feeling great the morning of the run. I got 5 hours of sleep, and had done a few training runs, but was still feeling meh about it all (I had also run The Color Run the day before as well). Last year I ran this race right after the Disneyland Half, and was in much better shape, so I felt like, comparatively, this wouldn’t be a great morning.

I drove to Thomas’ and he drove us to the race. We parked at the finish and shuttled to the start. We were really only hanging out for about 10 minutes when it was time to run! We both decided to just fun run the race since we weren’t feeling particularly fresh (he was in the thick of training for the Portland Marathon).

This race starts out on a descent, which is awesome. I found a good groove and ran on. This was my third race of the fall season after a summer race hiatus. Mile 1 was super quick. I was wearing a shirt i just got from running with the Eugene Hash House Harriers, and I had 3 people come up and say hello during the race, which was pretty awesome!

I missed the sign for mile 2, so I felt like the race was starting to drag. I started having suspicions that I missed it when we ran up an onramp and across the steel bridge and sure enough, BAM! Mile 3! In racing I feel like that’s always the best surprise ever! Soon after I hit the 5k mark and was officially half done. And I felt great!

Once over the bridge, it was about a mile to the waterfront, essentially a big “L” shape through the city. I kept seeing the course get halted to let cars pass which was nerve wracking, but luckily it would clear up just as I approached, or be right behind me.

The waterfront felt like a decent stretch, maybe 1.5 miles (give or take). Pretty, but I was starting to feel ready to be done. There was a dragonboat race event (same as last year), so that was cool to see. Finally I was winding through city streets again on my way to the finish!

Then insanity struck. I saw a volunteer preparing to shut down the street. I looked behind me and saw no one for quite a while. I figured, “well, he won’t stop ONE person for these cars, I’m sure he’ll wait for me to pass”. But he didn’t! He started holding up his little flag and put a hand up! And then it all happened so fast. I felt like my pace was pretty decent, and after remembering when Thomas evaded the traffic controllers at Portland Shamrock Run, I just went for it. I yelled, “sorry!” and kept running. I assure you all, my life wasn’t in danger, the car wasn’t moving, everyone was just fine. The volunteer looked pissed off and yelled at another volunteer if he got my bib number.

I sprinted on with my hand over my bib for a while (probably longer than necessary). After a while I looked back and no one was chasing me. No one was going to disqualify me. I was just a jerk on course, and I’m sorry to make the volunteers’ job more of a chore instead of something fun.

But alas, the finish is before me! I crossed the finish line and clocked in at 1:08:44- about a 2 minute improvement from last year! Not bad considering I felt out of shape and was planning to fun run. Thomas was there at the finish and it was awesome to see him. I told him my harrowing story of dodging the volunteers and he just laughed, so I loosened up about it too.

6.2 done, and I earned my reward, a gold cup of Alchemy ale from Widmer!

It was such a nice morning. We grabbed plates of food and ate/ decompressed a bit from running, then grabbed our beers and stood in the sun and chatted. At this point I was still so happy to be out of the humidity of Tokyo, so I just enjoyed my beer and my friend and the weather. We people watched and laughed and it was an awesome reminder how much I love my friends back in the States.
Thomas and I, full of beer and pasta! Circa 10am 😉

I love this race, and I do believe (besides walking Komen Race for the Cure annually) it’s my first repeat run! So maybe I’ll be back in 2014 to conquer again. I’m a sucker for a good race course. And the Pacific Northwest. And pints. AND pasta. So, I think it’s safe to say I’ll be back in 2014 😀

The Day I Eloped! 8.19.10

The truth has officially come out- Dan and I are married! And have been for about 3 years!

Summer 2010 was a turbulent time. My marketing job wasn’t panning out as I’d hoped, Dan was moving to Japan in September and my mother was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. It was a lot to deal with. At some point, Dan and I decided to try to stick it out and continue dating despite his relocation to Tokyo. This would mean that whenever I moved to Japan, I would have 90 days (a tourist visa) to secure a job. It was a lot of pressure. It was that, or stay in the US. Or… get married.

By August of 2010 Dan and I had been together about a year and a half. We were already flying out to Vegas to celebrate my bestie Kelsey’s birthday with her and her boyfriend Jim. We had thrown the idea around once or twice in the past few weeks, but now here we were, sitting on our 2 hour flight to Vegas from Seattle, writing up a pro/con list on an airsick bag. It was crazy.

The biggest issue was that Dan had no desire to really do the marriage thing. We agreed a year and a half of dating wasn’t long enough to make a lifelong decision. We went into this agreeing it was explicitly for me to have a spousal visa for 3 years in Japan. With this in mind, besides our mothers, we decided to keep this to ourselves. (and obviously, in time Dan had a change of heart ;))

When we landed in Vegas (coincidentally, the city we met!) we told Kelsey and Jim our plans and they were so supportive and happy to be our witnesses. I ran into Fashion Show Mall and bought a white sundress. We got to out hotel, the Palazzo, and changed. I had no makeup with me, and didn’t bring a curling iron! This wouldn’t be any sort of fancy occasion, but it didn’t need to be.

Honestly? I think our witnesses/ maid of honor/ best man looked better than us!

Ready for the ceremony! This is getting way too real!

We left the courthouse and walked into the first chapel we came across, which looked like a castle of sorts. Took care of business and waited.
Then it was time!

I told Kelsey, who was also my photographer in addition to my maid of honor, “Lots of pics, but don’t you dare get my tattoo in any pictures! I want to show my mom these pictures some day!” (subsequently, my mother discovered my tattoo on my upper back on a family trip to Disneyland 2 years later).

Not to mention we’ve both lost a lot of weight since that day!

And we’ve lived happily ever after! This past week, in light of Dan’s family tragedy, we decided to go ahead and be open with our marriage. We also officially changed my name to Laurel Moffitt! I’m so thankful to all our friends and family who have learned over the years and been so supportive. Some people have been confused, some angry that we’ve kept such a huge secret. We understand. It was a crazy way to go about things, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It was a perfect summer night in the city where we fell in love 🙂

We are also excited to invite all of our friends and family to join us in Portland in August 2015 for our 5 year vow renewal ceremony and reception! As the time gets closer we will have more info on date, location etc.
