Happy Wednesday!

First off, I have to thank my future mother in law Cathy! She recently visited the Big Island in Hawaii and brought me back this awesome running shirt!
 photo A1-5.jpg

Big Island Running Company is a neat little running store in Kona, and Dan and I checked it out when we were visiting the area a year ago. On any excursion, I always have a “browse now, buy later” mentality, and was planning on getting one of their tech tees for running, but we were so busy I never got back to that store! So it was awesome that Cathy not only got this for me, but knows I love crazy bright colors (this picture doesn’t do this neony yellow-green shirt justice). Thank you so much Cathy, I love it! I wore it tonight for my Tokyo Ladies hash run in Takadanobaba and got a couple compliments on it, and was please to tell them who gave it to me 🙂

In all honesty, it was a bit of a lazy day. I did weight training yesterday, so I didn’t need to do double workouts today. I worked on reorganizing my closet now that I gave a bunch of clothes away, and took care of some other house things and events I’m planning (my birthday with my running group! Race for the Cure! Hash camp out! Tower of Terror 10-Miler! So much to look forward to!).

Penny has been feeling under the weather lately (a common problem with medium and long hair cats in the summer), and whenever I couldn’t find her, I knew right where to look:
 photo A2-5.jpg
She loves sleeping on this shelf! In donating a bunch of clothing (see the bin on the right), we cleared an entire “cubby” on this Ikea organizer. And she just loves it! I put an old shirt down for her to cuddle up on. For some reason, it cracks me up!

Later on I went to Tokyo Ladies Hash. It’s like our Friday group, but instead of having a circle and singing songs after, everyone goes out to dinner together. It’s really fun, but since I’m trying to watch the calories right now I didn’t stay for dinner.

It was my friend Rachel’s first time to be the hare, aka laying a trail for us to run, and since she’s awesome (like, buy all the runners glow-bracelets with your own money awesome) I volunteered to “co-hare” with her, and bag watch at the restaurant.
When I bag watch, I also do “hash cash”, where I take everyone’s money and mark attendance. Penny made sure I didn’t forget the sign in sheets!
 photo A3-4.jpg

My plan was to bag watch, and then after Dan and I would take a run down by the river. But another hasher showed up and recently had stitches and couldn’t run, and I was free to run Rachel’s trail. I was excited about it, but didn’t even think how unprepared I was for a run. I hadn’t eaten or drank anything in hours and was hungry and dehydrated. I also run faster at a hash than I do on my own, to try to stay with the pack, and that plus a grizzly leg weight workout yesterday didn’t make for a great combo. By the time I was done with the 3.8 mile run I was hot, cranky, and hungry/ thirsty!! It was a good trail though and I hope she does another one at some point. Even though I was a little unprepared I was glad I got to run it; I’ve been doing a lot of bag watching lately!

Dan and I decided to get Subway on the way home. We never get it here since it’s pricey (2 footlongs were about $20USD), but sometimes you just want that taste of home! Disappointing thing about Subway here though: you get 2 of each vegetable per 6 inch of sandwich. I had 2 pickle chips on my 6 inch, and then the “sandwich artist” placed an olive slice on top of each pickle slice. Ahhh!!!! I can totally eat a handful of pickle chips, so it’s maddening! But then when you’re eating your sandwich and get that 1 veggie bite, it’s pretty exciting.

Tonight is laundry folding and cleaning the kitchen. The excitement never ends!! Have a good Wednesday!

If there’s a word for today, it’s PRODUCTIVE! But before I jump into my Tuesday, Dan and I did something exciting (to us) yesterday: a trip to Costco!!!

Costco is kind of far from us, but it’s a nice little taste of home, and a nice break from the high prices of Tokyo. Let’s take peanut butter for example:
I bought the peanut butter on the left from Costco for about $11 USD, and the one on the right I bought at the grocery store across the street from our apartment for about $6 USD.
 photo A5.jpg
I’d also like to point out, we’re not fans of sugary, preservative-y Skippy. The import store stopped selling our beloved natural peanut butter! 🙁

The other great thing about Costco? FRUIT!!!
Fresh blackberries
 photo A2-4.jpg
Again, fruit is so much cheaper here than the local fruit markets.

Now, back to today!
It was a good work out day because I got in a weight training session and a 6.2 mile run! It’s definitely warming up here, and I waited til the sun went down to get my run in. Good to get it done though! I’m finally adding decent distance to my runs.

I’m most proud of all the clothing Dan and I got rid of today. Our closet was spilling over, and we just couldn’t take it anymore! So out things went!
Got rid of all this!
 photo A3-3.jpg
And this! (Note Penny napping on my gym bag)
 photo A4.jpg

My biggest problem with cleaning out my wardrobe is my classic excuse: let me lose the weight and then decide. When I had a big weight loss last year, I fit into stuff that hadn’t fit since college. But that’s exactly what I looked like when I tried it all on and it fit- a college student! So after holding on to things for years, I ultimately ended up giving them away.

I finally parted with something I was stupidly proud of in college- my Abercrombie & Fitch tank top collection
This isn’t even all of them!!
 photo A1-4.jpg
When I was in college in the early-mid 2000’s, it was very trendy to layer these over each other. Or wear under a polo. I just loved them. I’ve worn them as recently as last fall, when v-neck tees were making the rounds, but other than that, they just sat around. So I gave most of them away. I saved the white ones and a couple colors. Oh, the space it freed up!

I’m incredibly excited about my cleaned out closet, silly as it seems. This apartment is so small and it can be really frustrating sometimes. Up next: tackling all my beauty junk under the sink! wish me luck!

QOTD: Are you a packrat, or do you part with things easily?

Happy Monday! Let’s take care of business first: how adorable is my nephew in his Buzz Lightyear jammies?!
 photo bl2.jpg
I sent him a set of Woody and Buzz pajamas for his birthday last month (which still needs proper attention in the form of a blog posting), and my sister sent me pics of him that I can’t stop giggling at. To infinity, and beyond!

It was a pretty awesome weekend. In our commitment to stay healthy and active, we were out of the house constantly! Saturday we went to a Samurai hash, which is like our Friday runs except just outside of Tokyo in Kanagawa. They usually involve scaling some some mountains and getting good and dirty. The run was 4 miles, and took us up some pretty steep hills.
Scaled up this beast of a hill. May not look steep, but my legs were killing me after!
 photo A1-3.jpg
Reward at the top? The view! Out in the distance you can see the nearby air force base
 photo A2-3.jpg
Did I mention the weather was alternating between pouring and a heavy drizzle? I was freezing after! All in good fun though!

Sunday I got my cross train on. I love running, but it does get repetitive, and a huge part of injury prevention is cross training. Together Dan and I went to our second hot yoga class. It was more challenging than the first one we did, which was good. After, I did a bunch of burpees and another ChaLean Extreme workout.

Remember my goals for May?
Run 75 miles
Cross train 12 hours
1,300 burpees
So far my progress…
 photo Screenshot2013-05-13at74046AM.png
So my progress is roughly 20 miles run, 3.5 hours cross training, and 125 burpees. I can catch up on running and cross training, especially as my endurance improves, but I’m struggling with the burpees, I didn’t expect my abs to take such a beating! I will probably fall short on that goal, but I’ll keep trying my best.

Hope you all have a happy, healthy week!

Hiking Mt. Takao

With my visitors being from the ever beautiful and outdoor-friendly Pacific Northwest, they definitely wanted to do a hike while visiting Japan. It kept getting pushed to the bottom of our priorities, which is how we ended up making our climb their last full day in Tokyo.

I chose Mt. Takao because it was only about an hour from my apartment. We got up and out early and hit the train. I was pretty excited to be hiking with Brittany and Amanda. For one, I only started hiking last year when I lost a bunch of weight, and have only been on a couple hikes. Two, they were both pretty experienced and love hiking, so I was in good company!

There are many trails leading up to Takao, and we ended up taking a different one than I took the last time I did the hike. The first time, I recall tons and tons of stairs. This time, it was massively uphill. I didn’t mind, but it got my heart pumping for sure!

 photo IMG_3343.jpg

The new path opened my eyes to new stuff I missed last time- like a monkey habitat!
 photo IMG_3349.jpg
 photo IMG_3365.jpg

I really like the Takao hike because there’s so much interesting stuff to see. Shrines, statues, vendors offering food and souvenirs.
Amanda posing with some One Piece characters

Brittany, lover of marine life, posing with an octopus
 photo IMG_3375.jpg

Admiring monkey and lots of photo taking made for excessive dilly-dallying, but we eventually made it to the top!
 photo IMG_3388.jpg
See that dip in the middle of the mountains? That’s the snowy peak of Mt. Fuji! Darn the cloud cover!
 photo IMG_3383.jpg

So, what’s at the top of Mt. Takao? A beer garden! Hikers come and hike, and then enjoy a cold one before heading back down. Who are we to argue with tradition?

Another perfect day with my best friends!

The Portland Pink Sox

Hey all! I have awesome news! I know it’s still way early in terms of Portland Race for the Cure (which is September 15th), but as of now our team, the Portland Pink Sox, is in first place for donations!!
 photo Screenshot2013-05-08at81851PM.png

I thought I’d take today to talk about the Pink Sox’s history. It all started when I learned my mother had stage III breast cancer in 2010. This was also the time Dan moved to Japan. So much change all at once! I moved away from Seattle and in with my mother, where together I was there for her as much as I could be as she went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I’ll spare you the details, but it was brutal. She was in pain, unhappy, sick. So sick. It was so hard to be there for her when I was so scared. I really felt so bad and wished so many times to trade places with her.

Ultimately though, she made it through like a champ. But while she was sick, Komen Race for the Cure came to Portland and my sister and I decided to walk. Then we started to think bigger. What if we invited friends? Made a team? Fund raised? We got really excited by all of this.
Whitney, Amanda, Sandra, me, Katie, Lauren, Thomas, Melissa, Vanessa and Brittany- the original 2010 Pink Sox!

We were a team of 10! We had so much fun! But then 2011 rolled around and we decided to go even bigger…
 photo aap2.jpg
16! We welcomed Kelsey, Jim, Dan, Cathy, Libbie, and Stephanie. We also made awesome t shirts for the event.
And backpacks!
 photo AAP1.jpg
Last year, we weren’t messing around. We had this down pat! We welcomed Brita, Vicki, Sarah, Alexis, Shana, and who I believe to be the cutest new Pink Sox, baby Nate!

The cutest Pink Sox ever!
 photo IMG_3022.jpg

This year will be our fourth year as the Portland Pink Sox, and I’m so excited! We’re already off to an amazing start. If you will be in the Portland area Sunday, September 15th and want to walk the 5k with us, please sign up and join us! If you can’t make it, we’d truly appreciate any donation, no matter how small. Donate today!

I would also LOVE it if you like us on Facebook!

Happy Wednesday!

I had a wonderfully lazy Wednesday because it was my rest day! I just worked on cleaning up the apartment and now that my visitors are gone and I have the time, started studying more diligently for my CPT exam. I’m hoping to take the test when I’m stateside this fall! I did end up going on a walk for about a half hour, just to move my legs. Pretty relaxing day!

Anyway, Cinco de Mayo might be old news, but since I just uploaded pictures from my phone to my computer, I thought I’d tell you about our Sunday. We attended the Sumo hash, which was a 5 mile run followed by a Cinco de Mayo party. Since I first heard about this event when I was injured, I forgot I volunteered to be the bag watcher while everyone ran- d’oh! So I sat in the park and read while everyone was running in the sun.
Everyone was told to wear red, white and green, so this was all we could come up with. Not pictured- our red knee socks!
 photo IMG_0650.jpg

The run and party was thrown by my friends Kuang and Mai.
Mai and I
 photo IMG_0652.jpg
After the run, Kuang brought out a ton of delicious home made Mexican food. So good! Dan and I also made our GuacAMAZING. It was also Kuang’s birthday that weekend, so I made him a cupcake cake in the spirit of the holiday!
 photo IMG_0638.jpg
I should add, that was the most phenomenal chocolate cupcake I’ve ever made. If anyone wants the recipe, give a holler and I’ll post it!
With my running friend Yukie and coworker Erica
 photo IMG_0651.jpg

I thought I’d also share another snippet of a busy day with my visitors- going to the Tokyo Sky Tree
Brittany, Amanda and I with the Sky Tree during the day
 photo IMG_3169.jpg

The Sky Tree is the world’s second tallest structure. It’s also just really pretty!
Sky tree at night
 photo IMG_3281.jpg
As you can imagine, the view was incredible. You pay to be taken to the observation deck, and once there you can pay a little extra to go up an additional 100 meters.
So we did just that! And look, even the elevators are cool! Exposed, lit-up elevator shafts
 photo IMG_3292.jpg
What’s that in the distance? I found Disneyland, then waited til 9pm (only like 15 min) for the fireworks to start!!

Tomorrow: running 5 miles then back to tanabata dance class! I’m excited because I haven’t been since my friends arrived a few weeks ago. Will be good to see my dance pals again!

Race Fever is Back!

I have more stories to share of my favorite blonde visitors, but I thought I’d jump to present day to fill you all in with my running and fitness endeavors.

Here’s how the past few weeks have broken down: My friends were here for 2 weeks, which left me with no time to exercise (though we did our fair share of walking!) and ate all our meals out so they could experience Japanese food. Once they left, I took a few days to decompress, sleep in, basically just relax from tour guide duties. It was Golden Week here however, so we attended some hangouts and parties, and of course had a cinco de mayo party with our running group! So much junk food.

But this week, Dan and I have really turned it around. I go on vacation in 3 months, and I wanna look and feel great. So for all my readers that far more appreciate my diet and exercise posts, get ready to have a field day! I’m back on track with both and feeling good.

First off, I had a running problem finally diagnosed. No, not the achilles. That’s old news. What’s been troubling me is crippling calf pain when I run even short distances. Thanks to reaching out on Twitter, I got an answer! My podiatrist recommended I get new shoes, and the extra cushioning that I’m not used to corrects my stride. I’m striking with my forefoot now when I run, not my heel. It’s a good thing! Instead of my bones absorbing the shock as I run, my muscles do. Only problem is, my muscles aren’t used to it! Yikes!! So that’s a work in progress. But I always feel better just being able to pinpoint the issue.

Today for exercise I ran 5k, did a ChaLEAN Extreme workout, and went on a half hour walk. All in all a good day! I’ve even been remembering to wear my little Fitbit!
 photo AAphoto.jpg

I was feeling so good today, I signed up for some races!
 photo 5382b5e6-1d24-4771-a7c9-8160f847f636.jpg
First off, doesn’t this just look/ sound fun? In an effort to be healthier, Dan and I try to run a race when on vacation. So we found a fun little 5k to do in Waikiki! My mom is even doing it with us! So I’m excited about that. It’s the first full day of our vacation too, so even though it’ll be fun, it’ll be nice to have out of the way 🙂

 photo rnr-providence-logo.jpg
Rock N Roll Providence! I was on the fence about this because I’ll be in Orlando the following weekend, and that’s a lot of flying, but I’ll be able to tick off another state in my “50 half marathons in 50 states” mission.

The other plus? Reunion with my college friend Meagan!!

Meagan and I in college, at my 21st birthday dinner
 photo bday028.jpg
I met Meagan at Oregon State where we were education majors together, as well as tap dancers. The thing about Meagan is we ALWAYS have something to talk about. It’s the same now as it was back then. I vividly remember the tap dance teacher shushing me.

Ultimately we went our separate ways. Meagan transferred to University of Oregon to continue studying education, and I switched to communications. We’ve kept in touch though!
Meagan and I at her bridal shower in 2009!
 photo IMG_1236.jpg
Meagan is currently living in Boston and finishing up her masters. SO proud of her! So, needless to say, I’m so excited to see her!

So with all that in mind, I gotta get back in half marathon shape! Or I should say, marathon shape… Dan and I put our names in the lottery for the Kobe marathon! Eek! Wish us luck!

I never thought I’d see an actual Tsukiji tuna auction. First off, it’s about 45 minutes-an hour from me. Second, it begins at about 5am, and I didn’t really know that existed either. And finally, it’s so popular that if you show up at 5am, you’re late and don’t get in. Seriously.

But let’s back up a bit. When you’re in Tokyo for only 13 days, you gotta cram as much in as you can. Sometimes your itinerary planning isn’t always ideal. This led to us spending an entire day on our feet at Tokyo Disney Sea after 5 hours’ sleep, and then heading almost directly to the fish market after.

The problem is that we were planning to get to the auctions at 4:30am, but the trains don’t start running til 5ish. So, an amazingly awesome person in my life who will remain nameless allowed us to sleep in their office downtown for a couple hours before we headed to the auctions.

We got about 2 hours of sleep, on benches and a couch! We left this office around 4am, and were off to the fish market! I type that with enthusiasm, but let me assure you, there was minimal (if any) enthusiasm. We were ridiculously tired.

To Tsukiji we go! (pronounced skee-gee)
 photo IMG_2926.jpg

We arrived at the main office via cab and told the guy working there was 4 of us. Whoever told us that 4:30am was a good time to arrive was wrong! We barely made the cut. They allow 120 people in per morning, 2 groups of 60. And believe it or not, it sells out every morning! We got in, and so did a couple behind us, and that was it for the day.
We’re in! Now… we wait. For an hour. On 2 hours’ sleep. After a day at Disney Sea. Which was after 5 hours of sleep. OY.
 photo mailgooglecom.jpg

While we’re waiting to go in, allow me to explain the tuna auctions a bit. They didn’t use to be such a tourist affair. It’s a fish market that brings in fresh catches of fish for Tokyo’s restaurants to bid on. At some point, word spread about the appeal of the auctions- the fast talkin’ auctioneers, the action, the smell of fish, the pre-dawn wake up call.. I’m not sure what the appeal is, but hey, there we were, about to experience it all!

Eventually it was our turn, and we were led out of a waiting room and through the open market streets to the auction room.
 photo IMG_2872.jpg

Did someone order the tuna?
 photo IMG_2876.jpg

We observed for about 5-10 minutes before the auction started. We watched restaurant reps and fishermen inspect the tuna, pick at it with small pick-axes, rub the texture, even give it a whiff. All at once, bells started ringing, and the auctioneers began their fast talking and taking bids.
 photo IMG_2897.jpg
And before I knew it, it was over and we were being ushered out! The auction part probably lasted 3-4 minutes total. I feel the same way I did when I celebrated New Years Eve in Times Square- glad I did it? Sure. Would I do it again? Eh, probably not.

So, what do you do at 6am in a fish market? Eat the freshest sushi of your life!

We wandered up to a fisherman and asked where the best sushi place in the market was. He told us 2 places, and pointed us in the right direction. The first place had a 3 hour wait. What?! It’s 6am! Didn’t people want to go home and go back to bed?! That sounded pretty good to me… but alas, the next place had a much shorter wait, so we headed there.
Sushi for breakfast!
 photo IMG_2912.jpg
The wait wasn’t too long, but being so tired made it feel pretty long! We got in and seated at the sushi bar and each selected a sampler platter. Dan, not being a fan of fish, opted for kappa maki, better known as cucumber rolls 🙂

Some snaps of our amazing meal…

Our amazing chef
 photo IMG_2924.jpg

It was such an amazing meal! Everything tasted fresh and wonderful. Even the sushi I don’t normally care for, like jumbo roe or tamago, were good. It makes me want to venture out and find more good sushi places near our apartment.

We perused the market a bit more before heading out. Lots of fish goodies, like shirts and keychains, sushi magnets, postcards. Lots of hand made goods too. I liked this plate and bowl shop. Cute plates for super cheap! Sadly I 1- don’t like mismatched plates and 2- my kitchen is packed to the brim!
Pretty!
 photo IMG_2925.jpg

After shopping we all concluded we were tired and headed to the train station. Dan and I went home to catch a nap, but the girls found the strength to do some sight seeing on their own that day. I don’t know where they had the energy… it must be because they’re two years younger than me! ;D

Hey all! As many of you know, I’m a brand ambassador for the company Bulu Box. I thought I’d take today to share an interview I had with Baileigh Rodgers, Bulu Box’s online marketing manager, so you can learn more about this great company and why I support its products and services!
 photo BuluCrew__0003_baileigh.jpg
First off, what is Bulu Box?
Bulu Box is the first vitamin, supplement and general health subscription sample box designed to help you feel your best. Every month, you’ll get a box filled with 4 to 5 premium, curated samples from top brands. We now have two types of boxes to choose from, the original and the new weight loss box which allows people to sample products that help them on their weight loss journeys.
What is your job at Bulu Box?
I am the Online Marketing Manager, or as some coworkers say “Paul’s Ninja.” I work very closely with our CEO Paul, and manage most of our online marketing.

What items get chosen for Bulu Box? What’s the process?
Before allowing a brand and sample in Bulu Box we have a proprietary product matrix of criteria that they must meet. There are dozens of variables that we factor in like taste, size, how interesting it is, etc. If the brand makes it through our initial checklist, we usually ask for a sample and from there we can see a lot for ourselves, such as if people at Bulu Box are excited about it and how it makes us feel.
What’s so great about Bulu Box?
Bulu Box inspires people to be better at whatever it is they love. 3 of my coworkers and I have started training for our first half-marathon, and our CFO lost more than 50 pounds since starting here. We even see it in our subscribers, people losing weight, achieving goals and just overall leading healthier lives. Now that we have two Bulu Box types to choose from, the original and the weight loss, it’s easy to stay motivated on your healthy living journey.

How did you learn about/ apply/ get hired w Bulu Box?
I was really connected in with the startup community, my brother-in-law works for www.Hudl.com and my sister just recently started her own company www.BoutiqueWindow.com and I was really intrigued by what Bulu Box was doing. I originally applied and got hired as an intern and when I graduated with my degree they decided to hire me full-time.

What does Bulu Box hope to achieve?
We help people discover products to live healthier and happier lifestyles. Bulu Box helps people reach their goals, whether it’s weight loss or running your first marathon. Everyone has different body types and we know not every product works the same for those body type and Bulu Box helps people find the products that work best for their body.

Why do you like Bulu Box? Are you active? What’s your lifestyle like?
Bulu Box is an extremely easy company to work for because all the people here are amazing. Bulu Box has also helped me discover a lot of products that I would otherwise not have heard of (FRS Energy Chews and Click Espresso Protein). I wasn’t very active until I started working here. We have a group that runs together and the company sometimes pays for bootcamps (http://www.bulubox.com/blog/bulu-crew-boot-camp-review/). My lifestyle is definitely a lot healthier since I started working here at Bulu Box.

I’ve had most people ask me about getting made into a geisha, and what it’s like, so I thought I’d blog about that today!

While my girl friends were in town visiting, we decided to do a Maiko, or Geisha, makeover in Kyoto. It was about $100/ person, which included makeup, costuming, photo shoot, and a cd with 20 personal photos and 4 photos of the 3 of us.
 photo IMG_2797.jpg
The entire process took about 3 hours. First went into a room where we changed into slips and took off all our jewelry. Then we got to choose our kimonos. It was hard to decide, but I settled on red, Brittany in teal and Amanda in blue. We then went to makeup chairs and got painted white and in full makeup. We were so white that our teeth looked completely yellow!

Once we were all made up, they dressed us in kimonos. So many layers! Another slip, then the kimono, then the obi belt, then ties to hold it all in place, a collar, and more decoratives. Finally, they put our hair in a hair net and donned us with wigs.

In short, we looked amazing.

I haven’t put any of the professional photos on my computer yet, but I did like this candid Dan took
 photo IMG_2801.jpg
As fun as it was, we were happy to disrobe and wash our makeup off. It was so hot!!

Later that day, we visited Kiyomizu, a huge gorgeous temple in the forest of Kyoto.
 photo IMG_2721.jpg
I really like this picture Amanda took of Dan and I!
 photo IMG_2700.jpg

And finally, we visited Kinkaku-ji, also known as the golden pavilion. It’s so beautiful!!

 photo IMG_2763.jpg

I’ll end this post with some goals I have for May. I spent enough blog posts complaining about eating all our meals out while the girls were in town, and it’s time to get in shape! This month I plan to:
-Run 75 miles (1 down!)
-do 1,300 burpees (15 down!)
-12 hours cross training (um.. work in progress!)
I’m hoping that by updating my monthly goals on my blog I’ll be held accountable and get it done! Do you have any goals for the month?
