I’ll start with my fantastic news first: Dan’s backpack was found!!!

Last night was a little rough. It took us a long time to fall asleep. We slept with all three locks on our door locked up, including our balcony door despite not being on ground level. With someone potentially having our address and key, we just didn’t feel safe.

Dan checked the mail as he left for work this morning and had an all-Japanese notice in the mailbox saying an unclaimed item is at the train station lost and found in Ueno. Trying not to get his hopes up, he skipped going to the bank and work and went straight there. And wouldn’t you know, they had his bag!

He seriously won’t put it down.

The crazy part is, on Sunday Dan was no where near Ueno, just Roppongi and Shibuya. Who knows how the bag got there, just glad to have it back!

My day was wonderfully uneventful. I was busy at home returning emails, setting up appointments, doing vast amounts of laundry and general post-visitor cleaning. I miss my friends visiting, but it was great not waking up to an alarm and being out on my feet all day! It was a nice day off, but I’m excited to get back on track with running and weight lifting tomorrow. My visitors and I ate most of our meals out, and I rarely had time to run. Not a good combination!! My current goal is to kick butt at the Tokyo Warrior Dash, so I need to get in shape for the 5k obstacle course by June 15th!

Since my day wasn’t terribly exciting, I thought I’d share some photos I took while down south with my friends. We spent a long weekend exploring Kyoto/ Osaka/ Kobe and Nara and had an amazing time!

We went to Nara to see the world’s largest bronzed Buddha at Tōdai-ji Temple. There are deer everywhere that you can pet and feed! They loved Amanda!

I have SO many pictures to upload of our shenanigans, but rather than dump all my photos into one giant entry, I thought I’d spread them out. Today though, I thought I’d blog about something a little more serious. Many people say Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world. Normally when I hear this, my gut instinct is to say, “that’s not correct… Tokyo’s a prefecture, not a city!” But in all seriousness, Tokyo is an incredibly safe place. Good people live here, crime is low, and all summer last year I never felt afraid to go for my late night runs in the park (my attempt to beat the swampy heat).

But this doesn’t mean crime is nonexistent. Dan and I got hit with an absurd amount of bad luck in the past 24 hours. Last night, after his running club went out for a few drinks, his backpack got stolen. This is really unfortunate because in it was his alien ID, house key, a decent amount of money (which is common in a city that usually doesn’t take credit cards), credit cards, running gear, my Disney World marathon shirt, and some other things. Stuff I don’t care about, the running gear can be replaced, but I get the willies thinking someone has our address (on his ID) and house key.

The backpack was actually a gift from a running friend. Here’s Dan getting his bag on his bday. I know everything inside was just stuff, but when you attend various hashing events many give out patches, and he’d built up a nice collection over the past year. Also in the bag were some gifts hashers had given Dan to give to my friends, like key chains and bottles of sake. What can I say? A hasher is a friend for life!

As I mentioned, today was my last day playing tour guide with my girls, and I thought I’d show them the wonders of cheap clothes shopping at Uniqlo. I saw a hoodie I liked, and set my iPhone down on a pile of hoodies to try it on. About 45 seconds later, it was gone. I couldn’t even fathom it got picked up. In my awful Japanese I had the staff on all fours helping me look and calling it over and over, but of course I never use ring tones, only vibrate.

Now Dan is without his identity in this foreign town and I’m without a phone.

Dang.

After I took my friends to the airport Dan and I hit the town to find his stuff in hopes someone turned it in to the restaurant he was at, or the police station or train station. We walked for hours with no luck. We came home, canceled all his cards with his bank, and moped. After that, we did a little more moping.

Tokyo can be a place that is vast and full of adventure waiting to be conquered. Today it felt like a big, mean, cold place. Maybe we all need these experiences to shrink us down a bit, appreciate what we have, teach us a lesson. My lesson was that I’ll always put my phone in my pocket or purse.

I still think Tokyo is a safe place, believe it or not. But regardless how safe a place is, you need to be aware of your surroundings. Dan and I didn’t have the best of luck this week, but maybe our misfortune can help people prevent something similar happening to themselves. Bottom line: be safe, people!! <3

I’m still alive, and miss blogging! I’m hoping now I can be back on a regular schedule after missing two days. It was just too difficult to get to a computer/ upload images while playing tour guide to my friends all day!

But let me assure you, we’ve kept busy busy, and I’m excited to share all about our trip to Kyoto, Disney Sea, and the tuna auctions at Tsukiji.

Until tomorrow, here’s a teaser!

Oh yes, we did a geisha makeover. That’s Amanda on the left, Brittany on the right, and I’m in the middle. I think we look amazing!!

Another successful day of wearing out my visitors! We went back to Harajuku so Amanda could get a red dress for our run tonight, met up with my friend Cole for drinks, ran the hash and had a late dinner of kebabs.

Our day in photos! It’s hard to document it all with all 3 of us randomly pulling out our cameras!

Tomorrow: We’re off to Kyoto! Have a great weekend everyone!

I have 2 exhausted Oregon girls happily passed out on my couch!

While Amanda wasn’t feeling so good, I took Brittany out for her first day in Tokyo. Since I’m bringing them hashing Friday, we needed to get red dresses to run in. The Lady in Red, a very famous hasher, passed away, and we are having an impromptu red dress run.

First stop: Harajuku!
 photo IMG_3660.jpg

We found some cheap red dresses and headed back home through Shibuya so I could point out some fun stuff, but all the pictures ended up on her camera. I’m sure we’ll go back with Amanda and I’ll get some fun touristy pics 🙂

We spent the evening at Tokyo Dome for a Yomiuri Giants baseball game!
 photo IMG_3671.jpg

Baseball games in Japan are awesome. First of all, the beer girls run up and down the stands with kegs on their backs, and serve you in your seat!

Second, we have cheerleaders!!
 photo IMG_3662.jpg

After we couldn’t take any more of our beloved Giants losing, we headed back to my side of town for their first bowl of ramen. They were fans!

Tomorrow: more Tokyo exploration, and their first hash!

Visitors!

I don’t have much to say today, because my visitors arrived!!!!
 photo B1.jpg
YAY!

Brittany and Amanda survived their 11 hour flight and made it to me safely in Tokyo! Dan and I went to meet them at the airport and brought them back to our place, then went across the street for some food and drinks. Now they’re officially ready to crash! They still think it’s Tuesday night, and it’s the wee morning hours of Thursday!

As for me, I’m excited for my newest package I’ve received! It’s a Fitbit!
 photo B2.jpg

All I can say is, I better not lose this thing!

I’m excited because it tracks distance, calories, steps, etc. I can’t wait to see how I do on rest and running days. Though for the next week days I’ll be doing a ton of walking showing the girls Tokyo.

Up tomorrow: the girls’ first Japanese baseball game! GO YOMIURI GIANTS!!!!!

Love for Boston

First off, I’m at a loss of words for the events that transpired in Boston yesterday. I have only been a runner for a year and some change, but I have developed quite a bond with the running community in person and in social media. If only non-runners knew what running the Boston Marathon meant to us runners. It’s the crème de la crème, people have trained for years to qualify to run that race. For someone to rob those runners of that moment in the sun is truly awful. Whether or not you’re a prayer, send good thoughts to those struggling with yesterday’s events.

I ran an easy 5k today, just to get out and move my legs. With my girl friends visiting for 2 weeks, I’m not sure how much time I’ll get in for running or cross training. The weather was nice, sunny and warm. I continued getting house work done and general reorganizing. One project we finally tackled was a growing stack of bibs and safety pins. We decided to hang them up with our medals. Dan did a great job!
 photo A1-1.jpg

Last night I also started randomly knitting again. I used to love to knit (and still do!)
 photo A2-1.jpg
I just love knitting with baby yarn! It’s SO soft! This was actually a blanket I began knitting quite a while ago, when I heard my college gal pal Carlie was pregnant with a girl. The girl is now nearing one and a half! Maybe I’ll have this done by the time she goes to college. Or maybe my sister will have another baby that’s a girl. Kind of fun, not knowing where this cozy plushy blankie will end up!

With all the craziness of Boston, I’ll leave you with a happy image… Teddy Grahams tanning at the beach cupcakes!
 photo A3-1.jpg
Aren’t these just adorable? My high school friend Nicole loves to make cupcakes and just got a gorgeous new Kitchenaid mixer (jealous!!). She though she’d test it out with these fun cupcakes and I just love them!!

Reebok Urbanathlon

What a weekend! The weather was amazing Saturday so we spent most of the day outside, and Sunday was Dan’s Reebok Urbanathlon.

But first, the winner of my Endorphin Warrior bracelet giveaway!
 photo Screenshot2013-04-15at34341AM.png
Yay! Congrats, Ashley! If you can email your choice of bracelet word, bracelet size (see website), and mailing address to laurel[at]penniestoyennies[dot]com, they’ll send it right out to you!

As I was saying, we had an amazing spring Saturday. I started the day out with a 4k run for the LOST virtual running series. Any fans of the old ABC show LOST? I loved it, and a centric part of the show was a concept involving “the numbers”, 6 numbers that are constantly recurring in various ways throughout the show.

The numbers are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, and this run series has you running each number in kilometers per month, ending with a marathon! Each month you run you get a medal, and your $20 entry is donated to National Tourette Syndrome Association. If you’d like to help out my pal Joe, just make a donation here!

After I ran my virtual 4k, Dan and I rode our bikes along the river. It was really fun! We took a break and had some sushi at one of our favorite belt restaurants.

I’d say we had our fill!
 photo A3.jpg

We biked home and that was pretty much our Saturday. On Sunday Dan ran in the Reebok Urbanathlon. It’s a 6k with obstacles. Think Warrior Dash minus the mud. He ran on a team with our friends Erica and Kuniko.
They all wanted to match but it was hard coming up with an outfit they all had. With help from my Team Sparkle wardrobe, this was an outfit everyone could make…

It was really fun to watch with my friend Annmaree and cheer for our group!
Here are some highlights

After we went out to lunch and then headed home. In the US races start so early. This on started at 1:30pm!
I’m happy it’s not raining as much anymore because I can wear my Toms again! My 14 year old nieces made it clear to me that Toms were very “out”. I made it clear to them that they should wear what they want! Oh, teenagers.
 photo A2.jpg

One last exciting thing happened this weekend… I signed up for the Run Disney Tower of Terror 10 Miler! I’ll also be doing the 5k with my mom!

And that wraps up my weekend! I spent all of today getting my house ready for my college girl friends. They come in less than 24 hours!!!

Family Friday

First off, today is the last day to enter my Endorphin Warrior bracelet giveaway! Enter here!
Happy Friday! Mine always is- it’s when I go hashing! I wasn’t planning on running with the group tonight in Kichijoji, so I got a run in this morning. I only went a mile, but I didn’t hold back and was pain free! It felt good! My shins were a little sore but I attribute that to the cross training. When I got home I did another ChaLEAN Extreme workout and showered, then made Snickledoodle cookies! Our apartment still smells amazing!

It ended up being a good thing I didn’t run tonight because the Hare (the guy who mapped out the running trail) needed assistance preparing an epic feast for all of us! Normally whoever lays the trail provides snacks- chips, beer and water. Not our Paul though, he came armed to prepare a 4 course meal on the spot- chips to start, then minestrone, then sausages and rolls, and tiramisu! It was all so good and such a nice treat! I love when people get really into our running group!

But on to even more exciting news. As much as I love my life here in Japan, I really miss my family. The details are still in the works, but we are planning to have a family reunion in October at Disney World!

I’m really excited about it. We actually did this a year ago at Disneyland, and had so much fun I can’t wait to do it again. Here are some of my favorite pics from the trip:

My sister Lauren, my niece Vanessa, my brother in law Paul, my nephew baby Nate, niece Vanessa, my mom, me and Dan.

So, in my 27.5 years of wisdom, here’s what I got- love your family. My parents did a great job on this one. My sister and I were always encouraged, always trying new things, always getting support. We have all the photos to prove it. We took great vacations that are such happy memories. And now at this point in my life, I want to do these things for my nieces and nephew. I want them to have a great time with their family. Even if they’re just going to go to the Sherwood 10 with their friends the following weekend and tell them what a drag we are (what can I say, I think I was the same when I was on the cusp of entering high school!).

And while vacationing with family is great, I still had a wonderful childhood playing with my sister, baking with my mom and her trusty brown mixing bowl (it was perfect for cracking an egg on, unlike my floppy white bowl now), movie nights with my family, art projects, and it’s all documented in photos. The experiences you give your kids doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just make them special 🙂

New Yukata for Tanabata!

Alright, so yesterday was National Sibling Day, and of course I didn’t know until the day was nearly over!
So in honor of NSD, (or as you probably see it now, Throwback Thursday), here’s my sister and I, back in I believe 1989. I’m in blue
 photo 19047_650814635288_4324284_n_zps8679d417.jpg
I’m so lucky to have such a great big sister!

Anyway, today being tanabata dance day, I spent the day over at Yokota air force base with my friend Christine. We ran, chatted and made hair pieces to wear with our yukatas. My run was ok- I’ve finally learned I just have to go as slow as possible right now to be pain free. And it worked! I was still sore though, my calves were killing me from a ChaLEAN Extreme workout I did yesterday. We did lots of lunges with a heel lift!

We worked on a challenging dance in class tonight that I’ll be performing at Yokota Elementary May 3rd. I need a lot of practice! Also, I got my club yukata, which I’m really excited about.
My lovely friend Christine modeling her club yukata last year
 photo 481942_320482591377283_1801167619_n_zps40e8cc2f.jpg

So a few weeks ago I purchased a couple yuakatas (you can see them here), and those are what we’ll normally perform at festivals in. We’ll all be different, bright colors. But for some fancier festivals, or tanabata festivals, we’ll have matching yukatas.

Tomorrow is Friday and you know that always puts me in a good mood- it’s hashing day! We’re celebrating a belated birthday, and I’m going to whip up his favorite- snickerdoodles!

Don’t forget to enter my Endorphin Warrior bracelet giveaway!
