A Run-tastic Day!

Well my day had a good start to it:
 photo A3_zps370b82c7.png
8 miles! This is so far my longest run post-injury. The time was slower than I’d care for, but my coworker Jenna came over this morning and we ran it together. Knowing I can get the distance down is great, and now I just need to pick up the pace. If I stay pain free in the ankle region and keep training, I don’t see why I wouldn’t be able to run the half marathon I signed up for April 7th ๐Ÿ˜€

When Jenna came over she brought me a sweet treat: Kit Kats!!
 photo A2_zps3907634d.jpg
Kit Kats are a big deal here in Japan. we have many limited edition flavors throughout the year. You can frequently find green tea and almond, around Halloween you can find pumpkin pudding, etc.

Today she brought me Amaou Strawberry Kit Kats from Kyushu. Kyushu is famous for growing the biggest, most flavorful strawberries in all of Japan, and let me be the first to assure you they are delicious!!

Jenna and I enjoyed a late lunch together before she had to head into work for some night classes. I freshened up and headed out to Akasaka-Mitsuke, where the Tokyo Ladies Hash House Harriers running club was meeting. My friend Cole was in charge of creating a fun trail for everyone to run, and I stayed with everyone’s bags while they ran. I caught up on some emails and then continued reading City of Bones. Anyone a fan of the Mortal Instruments novels? My niece Vanessa loves these books and convinced me to give them a go!

Once all the runners (including Dan) were back, I was free to leave my post and head to the trains. My friend Annmaree snapped a quick picture while we waited!
Yukie, me, Dan and Luke

The picture doesn’t do it justice, but I’m wearing a new hoodie that’s the prettiest shade of minty green! Perfect for spring. My mommy got it for me last time I was visiting Oregon. Thanks Ma!

Now it’s time to enjoy the rest of my evening with some tea! Tonight’s mug I picked up at Universal Studios Japan this past fall. It’s Snoopy and all his siblings! Here in Japan people love Snoopy, and there’s a lot of merchandise for his siblings from the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Love it!

Tomorrow is finally Thursday- tanabata dance class! Meeting my girl friend Christine around 11:30-noon for lunch, possibly a light run, shopping for yukatas (summer, light weight kimonos for dance) and of course dance class! Enjoy your Wednesday!

Happy Tuesday all! Today I’m participating in a Blog Link-Up with Pavement Runner to see what’s in other blogger’s running closets, and to show what I have as well!

But first, the winner of my Tokyo Disney Sea cookie giveaway!

Congrats Krissy! Email a mailing address to laurel[at]penniestyennies[dot]com and I’ll get those out to you ASAP ๐Ÿ˜€

Alright, so my fitness closet! Let’s start with shoes.
This isn’t even all of them! But these are what I wear most. You will notice they’re all Nikes. Being a former Portland, Oregon resident, I had access to the coveted Nike Employee Store in Beaverton. That’s 50% off EVERYTHING that is currently on the market! Needless to say I love shopping there.
From left to right I have Nike Lunar Swift, Lunar Glide, Free 3.0, 2.0 and 5.0 (varying levels of cushion), and an old pair of walking around Nikes. The Lunar Swifts have been loved to pieces and keep them for muddy runs. I’m currently running in the Lunar Glides and cross training in the Frees. Ultimately I’d like to get professionally fitted for some good running shoes, but that will have to wait til my next trip to the US!
 photo A2_zps09592e41.jpg
Shirts! Again- just some! I’m not a huge fan of running in tank tops, since my weight loss has left me with some extra skin.
The blank shirts are solid tech or Luon tees from Lululemon and Uniqlo. The race shirts are self explanatory. The white patterned shirt and word block shirt are both from Lululemon. I LOVE the orange long sleeve shirt. It’s from my running club’s Halloween run!
 photo A6_zps608558b1.jpg
Ahh track jackets. These have a way of accumulating in my closet. I actually don’t wear most of these, but it’s hard to get rid of clothes here. The top left was a fantastic Lululemon jacket. Lesson learned though- don’t buy a white jacket! next to it is a track jacket Dan got for me from his work- it says XBOX360. Then an Underarmour jacket.
Next row down is my beloved Lululemon Scuba hoodie, Nike track jack, and 2 Lululemon jackets, and the bottom row is Nike, Seattle Sounders and Adidas.
 photo A4_zps21a74553.jpg
My meshy track jackets I like to use when I’m actually moving, like for jogging, walking, hiking etc. When I’m just going to and from the gym, I like a soft, cottony hoodie.
Pink galore! I have a friend who works at Victoria’s Secret, hence the excessive loungewear you probably see frequently in this blog. Along with a Mariners hoodie and my running club fleece. I love our logo! It also has my hash name on it, Froggy Style.
 photo A3_zps589a81a9.jpg
I love shorts, but since acquiring extra skin on my legs from weight loss I don’t seem to wear them unless it’s pretty hot ๐Ÿ™
I love the Nike Tempo short, which is most of what you see here. I also have an orange pair of the Underarmour version. The 2 pairs on the right are nice, compression-y shorts that I wear for doing yoga or work out dvds at home.
 photo A10_zpsf38a02f2.jpg
Pants! I’m most comfortable in black capris. I have about 4-5 pairs, from Nike and Lululemon. I wear them so much, most of them are currently in the hamper! But here you can see my two fave running tights, some cropped compression pants and relaxed fit capris.
 photo A9_zpsef43e0a7.jpg
Every runner’s wardrobe needs a little Team Sparkle!
 photo A8_zpsd1bc5048.jpg
Finally, hats! I only wear hats when it’s raining, and as long as I can keep the water off my face I don’t mind running in the rain! Lululemon and Nike

Dan’s Second Marathon!

Not only did Dan have his second-ever marathon this past weekend, he KILLED it! The only one he’d done prior to this weekend was the Walt Disney World marathon, as part of Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge. His disadvantages were the merciless heat and humidity, and the fact that he’d run a half marathon the day before!

First off, I should add that as much as I love running races, I really love cheering at them too! The night before the race I used my Cricut to make Dan a sign. Penny helped:
 photo A1_zps758e2008.jpg
We took the trains from Tokyo to Ibaraki. It was the inaugural Koga Hanamomo Marathon, so that was exciting. We got to the race site and checked in with registration, then Dan got his bib on.
Ready to go and representing in a Team Sparkle skirt!
 photo IMG_2245_zps076bf44c.jpg
Things moved pretty quick pre-race. Once he got his bib he made his way to the corral to stretch
 photo IMG_2248_zpsfa80534c.jpg
It was only a few minutes then that he was off! I wished him luck and told him I’d find him out on the course!

I took a gander at my all-Japanese race map and started to worry about finding him. The further you get from major cities in Japan, the less English you come across. I took my backpack, his backpack, and my hand made sign, and hit the road to find another part of the course to cheer for him at.

So many runners!
 photo IMG_2256_zps06621f3c.jpg
There was going to be a big clover, where he would run up and down 3 of 4 streets of a single intersection. Perfect! But after 25 minutes of walking I realized I wasn’t even halfway there, and that this map didn’t exactly depict distance too well. I headed up to the next main road where I saw part of the race. According to my map it was the 10k mark. I checked on Endomondo (gotta love technology these days!) and saw he was at the 8.5k mark. Perfect! For maybe 10 minutes I cheered other runners, then, after much worrying I’d miss him, I saw Dan!
I didn’t get many photos of him, because I wanted most the time to be spent entertaining him and taking his mind off the race!
 photo IMG_2262_zpsd725c0bb.jpg
I “pep talked” him on Endomondo, which is a way to communicate w runners while they’re on the move, and told him I’d be on the right-hand side of the course. I snapped a couple photos and then grabbed my sign and started jumping up and down like a crazy lady. He got so happy when he saw me, I was so pumped!

The moment was over all too fast and I had to strategize where to go next. I decided to try to head to the big clover of the route, but after 15 more minutes of walking realized I wouldn’t beat him to the finish line.

I made my way back to the start, which was also the finish, and found a place on the bleachers to sit. I entertained myself w my phone and iPad mini, and it wasn’t long til the announcer informed us the winner was on his way!

Seeing him cross the finish was ridiculously inspiring!
 photo IMG_2263_zps93faeea3.jpg

Slowly more runners trickled in. Some were dressed pretty crazy!
 photo IMG_2278_zps08449f36.jpg

The time passed pretty quick, and after not too long Endomondo said Dan was about 2 miles out from the finish. I got up and hauled my stuff out of the finish area. It was quite the tease of a trail: Runners first rounded the running stadium, then entered and completed a lap on the track. That would drive me crazy!
I tried to get a picture of him here, but no luck! He was nothing but a blur! But I held up my sign again and he smiled. He tossed his Spibelt to me and kept going.
I then hurried into the track so I could catch him again but he didn’t see me. So I put the sign away and tried to get a picture of him crossing the finish: FAIL! Too many runners came in and stopped, so my view was blocked. There were some professional photogs though, so maybe we’ll see what they got.
Getting his medal
 photo IMG_2287_zps47f0598c.jpg
Hanamomo means peach flowers. His medal!
 photo IMG_2291_zpsbfeaa543.jpg

He stretched and told me all about it. I was a little jealous, as I was also signed up to run this beast, but the ankle let me down. I was so happy for him though. And the amazing part: He shaved 70 minutes off his PR! Awesome!
Our running club isn’t a race, but we do call the first couple runners in the “front running bastards”. Today Dan was totally FRB, no matter his time. I like to say no matter what he does in life, he’s an FRB ๐Ÿ˜‰

More Like GuacAMAZING

Happy Friday all! Mine was really fantastic! Running, cooking, pretty nails and running club!

As you know, every week I make a treat for my running club. This week, I volunteered to make guacamole for my dance class Thursday, but then wasn’t able to go. What to do with 6 avocados?!

In lieu of baking this week, I made guacamole, or as I call it, guacAMAZING. This is a recipe I adapted from a friend, and I always get a lot of compliments on it!
4-5 ripe avocados (I used 6 little ones)
1/4 of an onion, minced (I used half and diced for bigger chunks)
1 tomato
1-2 handfuls of cilantro
1 lime
your favorite salsa
salt and pepper to taste
 photo A1_zpse72a4ff6.jpg
Dice avocados and place in a mixing bowl. Throw out all but one pit/ stone (keeps guac from browning prematurely)
 photo A2_zpsdebb71bb.jpg
For smoother guacamole, give it a firm stir. I skip this step usually because I like chunks of avocado. There will also be plenty of stirring later on.
 photo A6_zps9e851a99.jpg
Chop onion and add
Dice cheeks of tomato and add
Chop cilantro and add (I do this haphazardly, I like chunks of cilantro)
 photo A3_zps5ccdf9c6.jpg
Then add salt, pepper, and 3-4 heaping spoonfuls of salsa
 photo A4_zps8385802a.jpg
Squeeze in juice from half a lime. This is most important! It gives it a zing people love and also prevents early browning.
At this point it’s ready! Give it a taste and determine if it needs more salsa, pepper, salt etc. I normally go light on the salt, heavy on the pepper and use medium salsa. It’s really the most delicious guacamole I’ve ever had! For variations, you can add chopped jalapeรƒยฑos or garlic.

Anyways, on to my Friday!
I got up and after some mild dilly-dallying went out to get my run done. Slow but pleased!
 photo A8_zps8f809a22.png
5 miles! I’m finally starting to feel back in the groove of running. I took it easy, but put some effort in, so I was a little disappointed in my times. But coming back from a torn achilles, plus a few vacation lbs, would most likely be the culprit of that.

I came home and was excited to find these in the mail! Bibs for a virtual race we’re doing!
 photo A5_zps93cb7d98.jpg
I have to say, I love seeing these virtual races popping up everywhere. It’s a great way for Dan and I to feel like part of the running community back home.

Post run, I showered, had some lunch, made the above batch of guacamole and did my nails. I decided I wanted to put a sparkle in my step and went for a glittery spring color:
 photo A7_zps5d6ddb95.jpg
Around 5pm I got on a train with my guacAMAZING and met Dan at the international market at 6pm. Here we can find American foods in bigger quantities (and with bigger price tags!). I picked up a giant bag of tortilla chips for my guacAMAZING and he headed to running club.

I’m really hoping this Friday was my last running club where I sit out and take care of member dues and refreshments! I’m always happy to help but I wanna be running with the pack! The trail was only 5 miles today, which is what I did this morning, but something about running with everyone, I push myself more and I know I still need to take it easy.

But we had a great time and even got everyone together for a fast photo! I’m in the purple hoodie, my coworker Jenna is to the left of me, and just barely in the photo next to her is Dan!

Behind us is the Tokyo Sky Tree, currently the second largest structure in the world! So pretty at night!

Have a fantastic weekend all! I will be cheering Dan on as he runs the Ibaraki Marathon this Sunday!

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway from yesterday!

I’m excited to say that I’m getting ready to add a new element to my blog: giveaways! It will take some time though, because first the goodies I’m going to review need to be shipped to my mother’s home, and then she’ll get them shipped out to me.

In the mean time, I thought I’d do a fun little giveaway of my own. Not a super exciting, awesome, state of the art product, but just something I thought a fellow Disney fan might enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

We have 2 Disney Parks here in Tokyo- Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea. Tokyo Disneyland is comparable to Disneyland in Anaheim and Magic Kingdom in Orlando. But Tokyo Disney Sea is a unique, one of a kind park that always blows me away every time I set foot inside. They have awesome rides like Raging Spirits and Journey to the Center of the Earth, rides that I haven’t seen elsewhere. They also have your standard Disney thrillers, like Tower of Terror and Indy.

Needless to say, you don’t need to twist my arm to get me in the park!

Anyways, a giveaway!
I was at Disney Sea recently and picked up some souvenirs to give to friends, and ended up with one too many. I thought one of my awesome readers may enjoy the treat ๐Ÿ™‚

I think the tin is so cute!

More Cherry Blossoms!

Added another mile to my running today, and then decided to just make it a 5k.
 photo DD_zps8ac137da.png
I definitely felt some soreness and aching from my ankle, but as usual I came home and iced it right away. I plan to rest tomorrow, and Friday return to my running group but take it easy.

Today is a holiday here in Japan, so no work today! Dan spent the morning with friends while I ran and made a card with my Cricut for his friend who just had a baby:
 photo AA_zpsb05a73f4.jpg

We then did some grocery shopping for some goodies I’m making. Tomorrow is the first class of the season for my dance group! I’m so excited! We’re having a pot luck and I’m making my famous guacamole (recipe stolen from our good friend J.R.), and then Friday I’m making cookies for my running club. While out at the produce booth we passed a store with the cutest lip gloss display:
 photo CC_zps34c19047.jpg
I just LOVE Marie from The Aristocats!

Later in the afternoon we took a walk in the park I usually run in. It was so gorgeous with all the cherry blossoms! I brought my SLR camera and snapped some photos of the pretty blossoms

 photo IMG_2223_zps84902266.jpg
These flowers remind me of the Golden Afternoon song in Alice in Wonderland ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t know what kind of flowers these are, but I thought they were so pretty!
 photo IMG_2238_zps831b3727.jpg

I made my mom’s famous banger casserole for dinner and now we’re finally going to see Wreck it Ralph! I’m all ready with my tea and mug of the night- my Club 33 mug I got this past January during the Tinker Bell half marathon weekend!
 photo BB_zps99913c1f.jpg

It was a really great Tuesday: amazing weather AND I went for another run! My comeback is live and happening!
 photo AA_zps47f1730d.png
A slow and steady 2 miler. It was fine, I felt out of shape, which is to be expected after not running for a month and a half. I came home and iced right away and felt pretty good. Minor achilles pain when I started running but it went away! I think until further notice/ pain, I’m back on the running scene!

In other news, my local park that I run in is all abloom for spring! I love it!
 photo CC_zps845cfb23.jpg

Those trees are sakura, or cherry blossom trees. In Japan every spring, it is customary to walk through the parks and enjoy the cherry blossoms. It’s called hanami, and many people bring out giant cameras for some photography, or enjoy a picnic under the blooms. It’s so pretty!

I attempted to get a pic of myself with the cherry blossoms on my run. Don’t mind my glasses, I had shipping problems with my contact lenses (the life of an expat!) and am stuck wearing glasses for now. Fact: your dorkiest frames are the ones that stay on your face best during exercise. Sigh.
 photo BB_zps3cde0349.jpg

Once I was cooled off and hydrated post-run, I hit the textbooks for a bit. When I was fully committed to diet and weight loss (aka before I visited the states and fell off the band wagon, swearing I’d run it off as soon as I got home, til I got injured…) I had taken an avid interest in becoming a personal trainer, or maybe a running coach. I got the learning materials from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, but haven’t been able to give it much time. So now I’m going over the material, and maybe next time I’m in the states I can take the exam.

Now I’m not sure if these two things go hand in hand, but I did have a study buddy my mom sent to me from the wonderful folks at See’s Candies…
 photo photo1_zps226433cd.jpg

I hope you all have a great Tuesday!

Shoop Shoop!

I’ll level with you: my Saturday wasn’t very thrilling. Chores around the house, and then Dan and I rode our bikes to one of our favorite sushi restaurants. That evening, we caught up with some episodes of The Big Bang Theory. And then we went to bed at 10pm.

Why? Because we had to be up at 5am Sunday to go skiing!!!

Skiing is something I have always wanted to do and never had the chance. In college my best friend Thomas took me to the mountains once, where I tried snowboarding. It just wasn’t happening. Seriously. He suggested with a background in ice skating I should give skiing a whirl, that it might suit my center of balance better.

But the opportunity never presented itself, despite living in the pacific northwest, having a fiancรƒยฉ with some skiing experience AND having 2 of my best girl friends be competitive skiers.

But all that changed when my running friend Kyle invited Dan and I to join him and his girlfriend for a day trip to Naeba ski resort in Niigata! The plan was for Kyle to teach his girlfriend Mai to snowboard, and Dan would teach me to ski. Eeeee!!

We were up at 5am and on the train by 5:45am. We met Kyle and Mai and boarded a bus that would take us out of the city (gasp! that never happens!) and 3 hours northwest to the prefecture of Niigata.

I was so excited and nervous! I was worried it would be a repeat disaster of learning to snowboard.
Niigata bound! Dan and I in the back, with Kyle and Mai up in front. Photo by Kyle
 photo IMG_0469_zpse18af1d8.jpg

About 3.5 hours later we arrived!
 photo IMG_0513_zps0008e6cc.jpg

Snow!
 photo IMG_0512-1_zps1c9d894a.jpg

We got off the bus and took care of all the pre-fun stuff: renting gear, getting a locker, getting lift tickets, using the restroom, changing, etc. By the time we stepped outside, we were ready for fun!
 photo IMG_0475_zpsf9d1bb38.jpg

Ok ski instructor, let’s do this!!
 photo IMG_0478_zps1f0721dc.jpg

At first, I was really discouraged. I clicked into my skis, and Dan explained the premise of pizza-french fries (make a pizza piece shape w your skis to go slow, and make 2 french fries to go fast). We decided to start at the base of a small hill. I kept tripping over my skis! One ski would pizza while the other would french fry. I was mad at myself for getting discouraged- it had only been 10 minutes!

I had a good solid 10 second glide and that boosted my confidence!
 photo F30SNP49bhizRuaJ6ERom1-53EQ9XYGxRIWHA_iYHjY_zpsbb2dfea4.jpg

I clicked out, ran my skis up the little hill and tried again. We did that a few times and then it was time to ride the chair lift and ski an actual run!

Gulp.

Meanwhile, Kyle and Mai were busy being adorable
 photo IMG_0489_zpsb4c84551.jpg

Getting to the chair lift in skis was a little tricky. We got in position and the chair, quite literally, swept me off my feet! We had a nice ride to the top, and a gorgeous view of the ski resort. Too bad I didn’t get a picture, my white knuckles were busy clinging to the chair lift!

We made it to the top, and I didn’t fall on my face getting off the lift! I felt pretty victorious and was ready to take on a slope. We could go left or right, but the right side started with a big hill, so we went left.

Whoops!

Left was a little more advanced. It took me a long time to get down, and I just skied back and forth. I couldn’t believe how easy I glided, how light I felt, how powdery the snow was! Well, til I landed face first in it!

My first fall wasn’t bad. I was trying to turn and my skis got a little jumbled. I was about halfway down the mountain and Dan suggested we take a little rest. “Can we do that? Sit half way down?!” His answer, “sure, why not?” So we got to the side, and that’s what we did!
 photo IMG_0481-1_zps4a47a843.jpg

Eventually I made my way to the bottom and felt awesome!
 photo IMG_0483-1_zpsbea36b42.jpg

I should also comment on the weather- it was amazing! I took off my hat, and really didn’t need the coat and gloves, but wanted them in case I fell. I never imagined it could be so nice out! When I learned to snowboard, it was rainy and miserable!

We got right back on the ski lift and conquered the right side, the one we thought was too hard. That first hill was tough, and it had some flat paths I had to push myself through, but I liked it more than the first path we did. Once we finished that, we took a break and got some lunch.

Once we were in the lodge, and I had a full belly and my feet in my warm Uggs, I debating going back out. I was sleepy from waking up at 5. But I figured we had time for one more run and I wanted to make the most of our time there.

We suited up and got outside just in time to see Mai snowboard down her first run! She looked pretty pro! It’s hard to see her, but she’s in the pink pants!
 photo IMG_0500_zps0c1d0dd4.jpg

We chatted with them for a moment, and then got back on the lift to do the second run again. This time, I had a lot of trouble with the first hill. It seemed really uneven, some places TOO powdery, and other places icy. Before I knew it, I took another spill. I clicked out of my skis and sat there for a moment, then got back up. I tried to click back in but I kept losing my balance. I got one ski on and then clicked into the second- and fell back down! It was so frustrating! Dan was being awesome and waiting for me at the bottom of the hill. I got back up and made my way down, but my confidence was shaken and I took it really slow.

Once I made it to the bottom of that hill we were cruising along.
Dan skiing
 photo IMG_0503-1_zps423b599c.jpg

The rest of the run went really well, and I decided it was a good time to call it a day. It was already 4pm!

We changed clothes and sat in the lodge and got to see Mai come down her second run. I ran outside to got a picture of her and Kyle really quick
 photo IMG_0508-1_zps537e2298.jpg

While they were getting changed Dan and I perused the gift shop. I ended up getting a sticker that says snow monkey in Japanese ๐Ÿ˜€
 photo IMG_0506-1_zps2b90d38c.jpg

Two more awesome things about this place: first, I love that they piped music throughout the whole mountain, I loved skiing to music! And second, there was an area where you could watch skiers and snowboarders while soaking your feet in a hot spring! So nice!
 photo IMG_0511_zpsff6429a3.jpg

The only downside was that it took about 6 hours to get back to the city. That made for a long bus ride! We had a couple rest stops though in Gunma and Saitama. Perfect day otherwise and I hope I get the chance to go again sometime!

Fabulous Fridays

With most my readers living in the United States, by the time you read my daily entry, that day has already passed for me. On that note, happy Friday! I had a great one ๐Ÿ˜€

My primary occupation here in Tokyo is teaching, however I spend a fair amount of time dabbling in voice work. It began a year ago when a coworker noticed whenever I retell stories, I give the people I’m talking about voices. He referred me to his modeling agent, and while I’m no model (HA!), he also tries to find me jobs for commercials and radio shows! It’s really fun and I wish I could call it a full time job. Some day!

Anyways, today I started my day auditioning for a commercial at Sony Studios. Unfortunately I can’t give any more details until I hear if they yay or nay’d me, but it was really fun!
No cameras are allowed in the recording booths, but I snapped a quick shot of the directory outside the studio
Photobucket
But that is atypical for an ordinary Friday!

I love Fridays because every Friday night my running group, the Hash House Harriers, get together for some running and drinks! Even though I’m currently out of the game with my torn achilles, I still go to be supportive, help collect dues and pour waters, all that good stuff.

Also, because I love baking so much, every week I make a treat! It’s nice because Dan and I still watch what we eat, and it helps knowing I can enjoy a little piece of whatever I make at the end of the week! You saw my cupcakes for Dan’s birthday last week, and this week I made a couple batches of brownies!

Unfortunately they were gone so fast I didn’t get any pictures! But below I linked back to the recipes if you want to give them a try ๐Ÿ™‚
Peppermint Brownies– the perfect cakey brownie, except I added the beaten eggs while the pan was too hot and they cooked a bit! I couldn’t serve mint brownies w scrambled eggs, so sadly those didn’t make it to the runners’ palates ๐Ÿ™
Dark Chocolate Brownies– They were awesome! They had that perfect flaky chocolate on top. Nice and soft without being too fudgy.
Peanut Butter Brownies– This is my classic, go-to brownie recipe. They are perfect!!! To feed my army of runners I doubled the recipe and added 3/4 of a bag of Reese’s peanut butter chips. Mmmm ๐Ÿ™‚

Tonight we were running in the lovely town of Asakusa. It’s only mid March and I’m already seeing cherry blossoms!
Photobucket

It was quite a commotion getting home though. While transferring trains in Shibuya Station, we got to bear witness to some history in the making! The Tร…ยkyร…ยซ Tร…ยyoko Line connects the wards of Shibuya and Yokohama. Today is the last day it operated under that name, before being connected with a much bigger rail line. Not too interesting. But what was interesting was everyone taking pictures of the Tร…ยkyร…ยซ Tร…ยyoko Line sign before it was taken down!

Do I miss having a car? Oh, sometimes. Only when I’m making my way through busy train stations! ;D Me on the right with my fiancรƒยฉ Dan and coworker Jenna, who is also my runny buddy ๐Ÿ™‚

Some nights (like tonight!) when I’m on a train so crowded I can’t even pull my phone out of my pocket because we’re so packed it, it feels like a miracle that I made it home! In such cases, I think it calls for a victory cup of cocoa!

Do you love my mug? It’s Marie from The Aristocats! She reminds me of my little tabby Penny ๐Ÿ˜€ Speaking of cocoa, while curbing my dessert cravings during dieting last year I developed an addiction to cocoa, cider and tea. This led to an addiction to mugs! I LOVE cute, whimsical mugs and almost always seem to find one I can’t live without while on vacation. Which makes for an inconvenient souvenir when flying internationally! Keep reading and I’m sure you’ll soon be introduced to a good chunk of my collection ๐Ÿ˜€

Exciting news! Update your bookmarks to www.penniestoyennies.com!

I’ve been getting a lot more readers lately (thanks all!), and decided I no longer wanted to use my name as my URL. When I started this blog 2 years ago, I used it to keep my family up to date, and decided on that URL because it would be easy for them to remember!

Why From Pennies to Yennies?
Just a play on words with currency. We don’t really call them yennies. The currency here is yen, and I would no longer be needing my pennies.

Though the pennies aren’t gone forever! I do visit family (and run Disney races!), and both can cost me a pretty penny! During or after traveling, if I reach my hand in my coin pouch it often looks like this:

You can find my first ever entry from February 2011 here. I’ll never forget what a scary time it was, living with my mother while she had breast cancer and ultimately choosing to move to Japan. I have to laugh a bit at my goals though! I’d love to take a moment to assess how I’m doing, two years later:
Goals:
Obtain employment- Check! Teaching English has been a fun way to have conversations with Japanese people, make friends and learn about Google as an American company in Japan.
Me with some fellow employees last year

Master getting about on my own- Check! I can’t believe I thought I couldn’t hack it as a city commuter!
Learn a passable amount of Japanese- Well… work in progress. We’ll come back to this one.
Meet new people- This gets a big, fat CHECK! I am always so nervous to put myself out there, but just a couple months after moving here I made so many friends as a tsunami volunteer. I made friends through work. I made friends through my running club. And then I made friends with my friends’ friends! Friends everywhere! But I didn’t just write “meet friends”, I wrote “meet people”. I met amazing tsunami and earthquake survivors in 2011, and while working as a teacher I meet all sorts of people who tell me about their lives- businessmen, retail associates, doctors, bartenders. It’s been an honor meeting everyone I know!
Eat new things- Jellyfish. Horse. Shark. Enough said!
See amazing places- From the beaches of Okinawa to Kyoto in the fall, amazing is an understatement!!

Live with only what I need- Will ALWAYS be a work in progress!

As silly as some of them are, I’m so glad I set those goals! I was able to effortlessly conquer some, work at some, and still need to improve some. And now I’m motivated to set more goals for myself. I will have to give that some thought though!

In the mean time, thank you SO much for being a fan of From Pennies to Yennies! Tomorrow we will return to our regularly scheduled programming of baking and running ๐Ÿ˜€
