Hot Yoga in Japan

Happy Wednesday! This week is flying by!

First off, I was so excited about yesterday’s giveaway I completely forgot to say that the countdown til my girl friends from college come visit is down to 1 week!
Me, with Amanda and Brittany
 photo 580332_652730098640_1934385156_n_zps3dcc23b5.jpg

Brittany and I went to Oregon State University together. She actually knew my room mate better at first, and we arranged a campus car pool with her since we were neighbors. As soon as we both realized we loved The O.C., we were fast friends!
Us in 2006- I was blonde!!
 photo IMG_0456_zps5867bdd8.jpg

I’ve also known Amanda since 2006, but since she went to University of Oregon an hour south I didn’t see her as much. We started spending more time together when I relocated back to Portland to take care of my mother during her cancer treatment in 2010. While I haven’t known her as long, it’s amazing how you can just click with some people. We both love running, shopping and sushi. What else do you need in a friend?!
Us at Race for the Cure a few years ago. I was 30 lbs heavier!!

So I’m incredibly excited they will be here next week! They are staying for 2 weeks, and I know the time will fly, so I’ve been trying to make lists of must-do restaurants and places to visit.

Today Dan worked from home, and so with that flexibility in his schedule we hit the gym together for his first hot yoga class! It was SO different from hot yoga in the US. First off, it wasn’t as hot. I feel like the Bikram classes I’ve taken in Corvallis and Portland had classrooms that made me want to leave as soon as I entered. Second, it was far shorter and less challenging- the class was essentially an 15 minute warmup, half hour of stretching, and 15 minute cool down/ shavasana. We also just stretched during class, we didn’t do poses. It was ok before with lack of running I feel out of shape, but I think if I was in peak fitness I’d find the class a little slow.

Dan did so great though! There were only 2 mat spots available, up in front of the teacher and in the back. He wanted to hide in the back (he was the only guy as well!) so I took the front spot. Whenever I looked back at him, he was dripping in sweat and doing awesome w his stretches! I’d love to take him to a Bikram class some day.

I also realized I hadn’t been to a gym class in a really long time, and I had fun! Hopefully I start going more 🙂

The bulk of the afternoon was pretty uninteresting- Dan worked and I did some “work” for our Hash, emailing and designing for shirts and patches we plan to order. I guess every day can’t be thrilling and exciting, but it was a nice, relaxing mid-week day, and I’m sure I’ll be thankful for it as soon as my girl friends come to town and we’re busy sun up to sun down!

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway in yesterday’s post. I’ll announce the winner Monday!

Happy Tuesday all!

I haven’t had the greatest running week. I’m on a new physical therapy regimen and it’s giving me a run for my money! My foot problem finally has a diagnosis- Hyperpronation, or inward rotation of feet. I’m working to strengthen the front half of my foot to get some of the weight off my heels. My achilles has been suffering because since my feet turn in, it isn’t properly aligned.

I feel so much better just knowing what the problem is! Now I just have to get stronger so I can get back to running!

In the mean time, I haven’t been feeling awesome about all my failed runs lately. I felt especially ashamed when I received a bracelet from Endorphin Warrior, asking for a review and giveaway. I really didn’t want to send it back, but what could I do?
My new bracelet, waiting to be loved.
 photo A3_zpsce98996b.jpg
Endorphin Warrior specializes in apparel and jewelry with a message- one that will keep you going. So I put the bracelet on and thought about it. How can I keep going?

In the mean time, I really liked the fit. Comfy, not binding, but also not jangly.
 photo A1_zpsb4e5cc2a.jpg

I thought about what a warrior would do. A warrior would find another way to thrive. So I decided to start that cross-training regimen, I’ve been talking about since last week, ChaLEAN Extreme. And I’ve been at it ever since! (I should mention I found a fantastic online fitness consultant and I’d be happy to recommend her to you! Just comment or email laurel[at]penniestoyennies[dot]com). I still get out and try to run every afternoon, some days I can make it and others I’m just in pain. But this dvd is a way I can still get my blood pumping and not lose all my muscle strength- aka how to keep my warrior status!

Workin’ it out at home

Ok, ok- THE GIVEAWAY!
So now I want to give you all the chance to win one! All you have to do is comment and tell me what word you would want on your bracelet. All the choices are available here.

You have til Friday at midnight. Good luck! I will announce the winner Monday, and your bracelet will be shipped out 48 hours after claimed. 🙂

Canceled Race

What a crazy weekend! I don’t even know where to start.

Friday night I of course went hashing! Dan and I ready to run

It was a good 4 mile run and everyone liked my cookies!

Saturday brought a BBQ… and rain. LOTS of rain. But it didn’t stop us!

Once a year the military bases here have a public day, where anyone can go on base. Saturday it was Camp Zama army post allowing people to enter, and since our friend Kyle lives there he hosted a BBQ. Thank goodness it was under a small shelter in the park! It poured the entire time but we didn’t mind!

My contribution to the BBQ: cake batter rice krispies! They weren’t as soft as I’d like, so I’ll have to play around with this recipe again before bringing them elsewhere. Essentially rice krispie treats with cake mix and sprinkles.

Erica and Kuang grilling up some burgers!
 photo A6_zps2eb1a3a4.jpg

Once all the meat was cooked, someone had the idea to cook up some s’mores. We grabbed some bamboo branches and got cooking!
They were so good!
 photo A2_zps509686c1.jpg

After the BBQ, we had about a 10-15 minute walk back to the train station in the downpour with no umbrellas! It was a little miserable, but we were in good company 🙂

One tragedy of the day though:
 photo A7_zpsfff3c666.jpg
See that hologrammy spot in the middle? That would indeed be my contact lens. I think I was standing near the BBQ for too long and the smoke dried out my eyes, because I kept rubbing them. Whoops! At least this was at the end of the day!

We tried to get a good night’s sleep that night because I was all in for the Tokyo Paracup Half Marathon the next day.

When I got up at 7 the next morning, I laid around for a bit, then Dan said, “it’s canceled”. WHAT?!
 photo A4_zps266840b5.jpg
Oh.

The storm the day before completely flooded the race path. I was pretty disappointed. I tried to go back to sleep but my pre-race adrenaline was pumping and I ended up chatting with Dan and reading before eventually getting a 2 hour nap.

With no race for the day, we decided to go to one of the local hash’s running parties. I made cookies and cream cupcakes, and they turned out perfect! I also love any excuse to load up my cupcake courier!
 photo A8_zps36b24d6c.jpg

My train line was down so I had to cab downtown. I forget how much I love riding in cars! Such a different way to see the city, instead of from a train line. We had a great time and it was good seeing friends. That night I did another ChaLEAN workout, and it wiped me out! I really like how challenging yet manageable these workouts are.

And now it’s Monday evening, and I did all that catchup stuff- dishes, laundry, run, general tidying up. I even had time to sit down and make some greeting cards I’d been putting off!
 photo A9_zps5d5008cd.jpg
I really like how they both turned out. I had Brave playing while I crafted too 🙂 No plans for this evening, so I may do another ChaLEAN workout.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Triumph!

You know that feeling when you nail a workout? You pushed and it felt good and you felt good and all is right with the world? Right here. That happened.

But first, I spent all day baking cookies for running club!
 photo A2_zpsb637a2a1.jpg
When I make cookies, I usually prefer soft, chewy cookies. These were crunchy on the edges and soft on the inside, and came out really well!

I really wanted to try and run at running club tonight, so I went out in my new shoes a couple hours prior and went on a walk. The weather was gorgeous today! I dind’t have any pain, so I decided to run tonight.

And I had a really good run! It was really just what I needed to give myself a boost lately. I’ve had so many failed runs that it was nice to get some mileage under my belt. It gave me hope I can actually do the half marathon Sunday. If I do end up running, wish me luck!!!!

It’s a busy weekend! Tomorrow we’re going to a BBQ on the army post, and Sunday we have the Tokyo Paracup half marathon AND one of our local running groups is having a 4 year anniversary party. Lots of baking going on here! Should be fun!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

An At-Home Workout

Hey all! I want to thank you all for your kind comments and e-mails I received yesterday. It has been so incredibly frustrating not only NOT being able to run, but having no one understand when you explain the pain! So thanks for that!

I thought I’d start today off with something I observed at the train station today. Do you remember my post explaining how a very old train line, The TōkyÅ« Tōyoko Line, was having its last night of operation? I walked by it for the first time since that night, and you’ll never believe what it looks like:
The only picture I could find of it before it changed: regular train station!

And what it looks like now
 photo A3_zps49946536.jpg
It was turned into a Uniqlo store! It’s so crazy, seeing clothes rack on train tracks.

Anyway, I tried to start my day out with a run but after spending all day yesterday in my new shoes, my feet were really sore and achy. Probably from using all new muscles I wasn’t using in my other running shoes! It was really disappointing.

So I came home and tried a new work out dvd a friend lent me. It was recommended to me by a running friend of mine who is a fitness consultant, and it’s called the ChaLEAN Extreme Workout. It has a hefty price tag, but luckily a friend let me borrow it so I can test it for a workout or two before I commit to dropping the cash on it. I believe it’s about $90 plus $20 shipping, but it has nothing but positive reviews on many web sites.

It was about a 35 minute workout, a good burn without being too difficult. I was only on day 1 though! I plan to do it again tomorrow and see how I do. On a random note- if you want to get fit I highly encourage you to blog if you don’t- I didn’t want to have yet another day with no workout to discuss, so I did the dvd! Nothing like a sea of people via the internet holding you accountable 😉

Also, how’s this for embarrassing? I was rooting around the apartment looking for some weights I purchase when I first moved to Tokyo 2 years ago, and eventually found them- with the packaging still on them! Yikes! Time to put these to use!
 photo A1_zps290c15fa.jpg

I didn’t have much free time after til I had to hit the trains and head out to the air force base for tanabata dance class. I’m still reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare and it’s become a lot more interesting. I should finish tonight or tomorrow, and then I can have a little book club with my niece! Now, what should I read next?

Dance class was fun, most of them were preparing to dance in a festival this weekend, and I can’t make it 🙁 I’ll be cheering Dan on at the half marathon, and then our running groups Sunday chapter, Square Hash House Harriers, is having a 4 year anniversary party, and I volunteered to bake something (of course!). Our next performance is at an elementary school, where we’ll perform and then teach the children a simple dance. Fun!

QOTD Do you have an at-home work out you love?

I’ve been quiet on the running front this week, haven’t I? In all honesty, it’s been a less than stellar week. Achilles pain returning, now a new calf pain, and a lot of runs cut short and frustration. But I think I’m FINALLY on the path to recovery!

But first I wanted to share a product with you that the awesome folks at Bulu Box sent me.
 photo A4_zps35782185.jpg
Vitamin C spray! I didn’t know what to make of it when I opened it. I opened it up and gave it a whiff. It smelled… healthy. Not quite like medicine but definitely some artificial scent.

This spray boasts that it can help w stress management, increase vitality, maintain radiant skin, along with a sizable dose of vitamin C. You also get a healthy serving of echinacea, zinc, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

I decided to give it a go! I gave myself a couple sprays and almost gagged. It comes out in a fine mist, not a splash. Once I was able to predict the spray it was fine. It was like a nice fruity burst. At first I had a nice placebo effect where I felt energetic, but ultimately I think it did give me a bit of a boost.
Pros- resealable container, easy to take (unlike some vitamins), 1 bottle lasts 30 days
Cons- if you don’t like artificial tasting fruit flavor, this may not be for you.

You can try Vitamin C spray and other fun healthy goodies for free by clicking the link above or on my side bar and using the promo code BULUGAN771. Enjoy!

Anyways, after many frustrating and halted workouts, I decided to find a new doctor yet again (this would be doctor #3) to take a look at my angry Achilles tendon. I should mention, there is not a huge practice in podiatry here in Asia. It definitely gets a lot more attention in America. I eventually found a nice lady who worked out of her home office. I was skeptical, but at this point with the intermittent pain, I was ready to try anything.
On my way to her house I saw a Nissan Laurel! Not every day I see/ hear my name, especially as a car model!
 photo A1_zpsddf935c4.jpg

I arrived at her house and she escorted me into her very professional looking office. I was more relaxed once I saw it. She then did everything I was hoping a foot doctor would do: asked me a lot of questions, felt my ankle, looked at my shoes, felt my inserts, watched me stand and walk, took imprints. It was awesome.

Diagnosis? I have inward-turned feet! I run with all the pressure on the back of my heel and the ball of my foot. No pressure on the sides, middle or my toes. I’ve never noticed, I just run! First off, she said my shoes had to go. The runner in me cried just a little bit, as I still had a little more mileage to put on them.
On the left is the shoe I wore for most of last year’s training and races, and on the right is my current running shoe for the past 6 or so months. The heel and ball of the shoe is completely worn down, and the toe and side areas are relatively untouched. Weird!
 photo A6_zps2c57fb54.jpg

Then she offered to make me some good shoe inserts for $430. Moving on…. she gave me suggestions on what to look for in my next running shoe, and recommended the brand New Balance. We paid her and left for the shoe store.
While walking down her neighborhood street, saw this pretty shrine. Only in Japan do you come across such random beautiful buildings!
 photo A2_zps147cf386.jpg

I tried on a bunch of shoes, and was torn between two. One felt good because it felt like what i was used to, and the other was the cushioning I knew I was supposed to get. So I went with the more cushioned shoe. They feel a little bulkier, but I need to correct whatever problem I have, and if the padding in this shoe will correct my stride and help my feet point forward instead of in, then yahoo!
My new 870v2 shoes I’m breaking in around the house.
 photo A5_zps9564f97d.jpg

I have the Tokyo Paracup Half Marathon Sunday, and I’m really nervous I won’t be able to run in it 🙁 I’ll go for a test run in the new kicks tomorrow and see how I do!

QOTD: Has an injury ever held you back from a sport you enjoy?

The Hash House Harriers

I have been meaning to make this post for quite a while, because I blog frequently on my running group, and I wanted to explain a little more what it’s all about. I haven’t been hashing as long as my fiancé Dan, so I thought it’d be fun to interview him and let him explain the joys of this unique running group to you. If I can get one person to at least Google a local hash after reading this, I’ll be pumped!

Who are the Hash House Harriers and what is hashing?
Tokyo Hashers getting together to cheer runners on at the Tokyo Marathon
 photo 382201_4450832590759_838349449_n_zps03d7dce5.jpg
The Hash House Harriers is an international running and social club with the tagline “a drinking club with a running problem”. After starting in Kuala Lumpur 75 years ago by British colonial officers, it has since spread all over the world. One runner (the hare) will created a trail with flour (or chalk or tissue or whatever suits the terrain), which may include hills, stairs, mud, bushes or other obstacles, as well as trail tricks like checkpoints and checkbacks that send the pack searching for the next mark. Trails can be on streets and sidewalks, as well, but just in case, don’t wear new shoes. After the run, there are usually water, beer and snacks for consumption while waiting for everyone to finish. Then a ceremony (referred to as “circle” or “religion”) commences where runners are called up for various reasons (fastest, injuries, ugly pants, cheating, etc) and they are serenaded with a “hash song” while imbibing some more beer.

What’s so great about it?

The greatest thing for me is motivation to run. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be difficult, and it’s really easy to let routines slip away, but having a fun group of people motivates me to keep up my workouts and makes sure my marathon training never slows down to a standstill. I also love making lots of new friends and the high level of respect that everyone has for each other.
Last Friday’s run. Always time for a group picture!

Is that it?

No! There’s way more! Everyone gets a personalized hash name (a nickname for the hash).
(This was the day I was no longer known as Laurel, and now known as Froggy Style!)

People get really involved and it becomes a huge part of their life to the point that they are making t-shirts to celebrate special runs and you can find hat and socks and jackets and backpacks embroidered with hash names. You see frequent visitors from all over the world who are visiting your town and looking up the local hash group was their first priority. There are awesome events like red dress runs, nash hash (national hashes), interhash (international hashes) and even non-hash related get togethers just to celebrate that you’ve got a great group of friends. Also, I’m still a 14 year old boy at heart, so I love the lewd jokes and innuendo-rific songs that comes from a social group that idolizes beer.
I don’t know who loves the red dress runs more- guys or girls!

There’s probably a kennel where you live! Search the internet; sometimes the latest runs are announced with websites or email lists or facebook groups or yahoo groups or google groups, but they’re out there! Some cities run monthly, some weekly, some whenever they feel like it, but if you’re in a big city like Tokyo, well good luck making it to all of them! We have 5 weekly, 5 monthly and a few others on their own schedule, with hundreds of regulars among them.

And there you have it! All you need to know on how to become a hasher. Good luck and on-on! (the call of the hasher!)

QOTD– Do you prefer to run alone or w friends?

I love a good soirée. Sometimes I even wish soirée was my middle name (no, not really. But it is pretty and fun to say!). Even better, I am blessed with a fiancé that also enjoys entertaining. When we were living in Seattle we often entertained and had fun playing host and hostess to our friends.

As I mentioned last Friday, we decided to have a south of the border get together! Mexican food isn’t as common here, so we visited a couple international markets and got everything we would need to stuff our guests with tacos, burritos, guacamazing and Coronas and margaritas!

Of course, I like any excuse to get some baking done. Especially when it gives me a chance to play with my awesome new hand mixer! I decided to make my first ever cupcake with a savory batter- pancake cupcakes with maple bacon frosting! I didn’t know what I was getting myself into!

I mixed up the batter and it smelled just like pancake batter. While those baked I whipped up a batch of frosting while frying some bacon. I got that chopped up and added it to the frosting, along with maple syrup. Once I got the cupcakes frosted Dan was ever so kind as to devour one- he was a fan!
 photo A4_zps72b9f908.jpg
After that, just in case maple bacon wasn’t every body’s taste (hey, I do have vegetarian friends!), I made a batch of dark chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting. These were amazing! I piped the frosting on with a starry tip:
 photo A5_zps6013346a.jpg

Our arriving guests spoiled us with wines and bubblies and there was much chatting and laughter. We were a diverse group of about 10-12 representing America, Japan and the U.K. We had drinks and played games. Later in the evening some decided to hit the road, so the rest of us did as you would when you’re having a fun night in Tokyo- enjoyed some karaoke!

L to R Brent, Erica, Duncan, Rachel and Dan
 photo A2_zpsa3d1be85.jpg
Oh, good fun was had here! Before we knew it our guests had to catch the last train of the night, and Dan and I found ourselves wandering back home.

The rest of the weekend was good and relaxing! We did plenty of post-party clean up, some typical weekend chores, and watched The Hunger Games and The Pixar Story, a really good documentary on the formation of Pixar and their earlier work.

Today brought massive amounts of reorganization to our little apartment, in my never-ending quest to find a place for everything I insist on owning and keeping. I unearthed several notebooks today… please remind me in the future i have enough notebooks!!
 photo A1_zps535e29cb.jpg

Have a great week!

Fast Friday Post!

I wish I could make a longer post, but I have a party to get ready for!

Tomorrow Dan and I are having a bunch of friends over for a fiesta! Mexican food is hard to come by here, so I got my hands on everything I need to make tacos, burritos, my Guacamazing, and some drinks. Should be fun! So tonight I will be dashing around my place trying to find a place to stow all my clutter!
Today was a nice relaxing day. I made a cake for one of our runners who is moving away to Osaka, and painted my nails. Pretty pink!
 photo A2_zpsf0135ef7.jpg
Later on I frosted my cake. I knew she wanted fruit so I bought a bunch of strawberries, but I didn’t know what to do with them. I ended up icing the cake then lining the cake with halved strawberries.
 photo A1_zps657ed2f5.jpg
It says “F3H3 <3 Nori Poo". F3H3 being our running club, and Nori Poo (her nickname) is the runner moving south. I think it was a big hit- it flew out of the pan faster than I could cut slices! But I'm getting ahead of myself! We had a good run tonight. A little hilly but it was nice to be running with the pack again. photo Screenshot2013-03-29at81130AM_zps10ab1d34.png
I even managed to snap a photo on the run!
 photo A3_zpsaa22eed9.jpg

So sorry to blog and run! Can’t wait to tell you how the party went come Monday! Have a GREAT weekend all!

Tanabata Day!

Happy Thursday all!

We had beautiful weather here today! I spent the day over at Yokota, the air force base here in the Tokyo area. My friend Christine from work lives there, and we had a lot planned for today!

She met me at the train station and we grabbed lunch, then we went to see some pretty cherry blossoms on base.
Are you tired of my cherry blossom pictures yet?!
 photo A1_zpsc8ffe192.jpg
After that, we went to the local Hard Off (like a Good Will or Salvation Army) to buy yukatas for dance class. A yukata is like a traditional kimono, but instead of silk it’s made of cotton, which is more comfortable for the summer.
So many colors and choices!
 photo A2_zpse5b9fb12.jpg
Having danced the full season last year, Christine was my complete yukata guide and helped me get all the pieces I need for my outfit.

While looking through yukatas, a woman came over to Christine as she was trying one and started helping her! It was hilarious. Once Christine was all wrapped up the lady guided her over to the obis (wide belts) to choose one that matched.
 photo A3_zps2ce89536.jpg
I ended up getting 2 cute ones- a light pink flowered one with a bright pink obi, and a light blue one with a deep pinkish belt. I love them!
My blue yukata

We always have time for mid-day silliness
 photo A4_zps394ed124.jpg
We made our way back to her place and went for a run. She was coming off a cold and wanted to get back on track, and I wanted to get a couple miles in as a recovery run for my 8 miler yesterday.
Ran on a track! It was a nice change. Cushy ground! Took it super slow, definitely had some sore muscles from yesterday
 photo A7_zps95bbcaee.png
Once done running we had a quick bite to eat at her place then made our way to dance class! It was so fun! We did 2 basic dances, then went over the basics of putting on, wearing and caring for our new yukatas.
Christine and I in the 2 yukatas I bought today
 photo A6_zps028d0d0c.jpg
All in all a successful day! And last but not least, I finally got a new, reliable hand mixer!
 photo A5_zps857e7f06.jpg
I’m tickled pink about this. I bought a hand mixer and the motor burned out while mixing cookie dough. Thinking I got a bad one, I bought another, and not long after it died on me too! So hopefully this one is tough enough to last in my kitchen 😉

Tomorrow is Friday, which means running club! My favorite day of the week! We are also having a farewell party for one of our veteran runners, so I’ll get to use my new mixer while I make her a cake tomorrow!

Enjoy your Thursday!
